3D or 2D really possible?

Hi All,

Just a little discussion on the possibility of a Canon 3D or 2D camera, do you really believe such a camera can be made, I'm thinking anything that could be higher than a 5D3 and below a 1DX could kill the market for a 1DX, I think Canon know this could be a deal breaker for anyone who would want to upgrade to a 1D style body, The only reason I am posting this is because I really hope there could be a possibility of such a camera range, I'm going to guess the next High Mega Pixel camera from Canon is going to be in the form of a 1D style body and just as expensive as the 1DX so no harm is done to their flag ship camera, this will leave me in a slight problem to upgrade, I'm dying to upgrade, but not as far as £4,500 ( I live in the UK )

If a high mega Pixel camera came out with no video Id even be happy, in the form of a 3D or 2D, but whats our guessing on what position this new camera will stand?

Cheers all, just a thought

Louis

Hi.
I agree with you.
IMO it can´t be a 5d body or similar because then it would be a direct competitor to the D800.
and canon can´t bring out a highmega pixel camera and sell it cheaper than their 5dIII.
so they have to position it above the 5d and of course above the D800 to avoid a direct competition.

but I dont see a problem 1Dx vs. 3D/2D
because the 1Dx is the sports,speed,hiISO-king
and the 3d/2D will be the slower but highmegapixel studio/landscape giant!
price....there is some room left between 5D and 1Dx.
keep your fingers crossed.

Canon will produce anything that sells. They have held the line on MP, because, as I found out with my D800, the 5D MK III is better for all around use while the D800 is great for portraits and landscape.
With the current state of the world economy, it seems likely to me that they will not invest another billion into a 1 series camera. Sales are dropping off sharply for every camera maker, which is why we see even the Canon 5D MK III and all of the Nikon models on sale.
As far as having accountants involved, it would be stupid to turn out a camera that would not make money, at a time when the prospect of a deeper recession and the resultant losses is looming. They need to keep the company in business, afterall.

I'd be hard-pressed to believe that Canon would produce another $5k camera right now with the 1D X just out. They'll go for a bigger, lower-priced market right now. Even the 1Ds3 and 1D4 were spaced out over 2.5 years.

I was thinking that if they got the IQ right then they would capture the lower end MF market - 5k seems a bargain compared to even the Pentax 945

Agreed. In 2-3 years I'd say a direct/comparible replacement to the 1Ds Mark III. Right now we don't have it. The 1D X is not it.

Personally, I think it makes more sense for Canon to release a 5DHD. Same body and price as the 5DIII, but swap out the sensor.

Let the customers choose which they want: High ISO and high frame rate but less resolution or high resolution with a slower frame rate and more noise at 1600 and above.

There would be minimal development costs and significant savings in production since most other components of the two cameras would be identical. Canon could simply switch the production lines between models depending on the demand at the time. Since both models would sell for the same price and presumably the profit margin would be similar, no worries about one "cannibalizing" the other.

I don't see how a 1D body style and price competes with the D800, but a 5DHD could. Canon could up the resolution to as high as 46 mp by simply upsizing the 18 mp APS-C sensor. If they dropped it down to the same density as the 50D, it would be 38 mp, which would still be greater than the D800. Although I'm guessing that if they want to create a "D800 killer" they'd go for 40+ megapixels.

I think canon since the 50D has become overly influenced by accountants than photographers.

I think you are on the money here, I would go so far as to say they dont actually have any photographers that even work for them except for the ones that use the green square and in camera HDR but they dont count really...

Does anyone actually think it was the 'photographers' idea to merge the 1D & 1Ds line. Of course not, it was a business decision to take two lines into one. Although 1 series cameras are the flagship and what people read about in magazines, and good for marketing, they are not the money maker to canon. Why tool two assembly lines when you can tool one, and charge more to help with the R&D costs. Hence "we merged the camera lines to one super duper camera!" Ta-Da!!!!

At the end of the day canon sells Rebels through to 5D's to make money and 1 series probably cover costs because of lower production runs and make for good advertising. Average consumers ogle 14 fps, they don't read that the it is achieved with mirror lock. Rebel owners don't ogle over f8 focusing etc.

But at the end of the day we need consumers to buy lots of consumer grade cameras so the R&D can continue to build 1 series cameras for the pros and serious camera enthusiasts. In the meantime we take a hit during economic deprived times where companies are most interested in staying afloat, which doesn't put them in a spot to cater to specified groups that don't have the camera sales to justify another line.

At the end of the day make as many product lines that are financially feasible and target the biggest markets. They are corporate company and have to focus on the bottom line.

Sucks at times but that is business.
