500mm f4 mk1 and extender 2 or 3?

Hey guys I pick up my new mk1 500mm tomorrow and I am wondering what extender to get version 2 or 3 of the 1.4.

both are wonderful glass if you have the money go for the III

I use a version 3 with my 500 f4 mkI, I think that there is no difference in IQ between the version 2 and 3 on the mk1.

If such things matter to you, the 1.4xIII has the 'new' paint that's brighter than the 500 MkI.

Is it true that AF is lower then with the 3?

Assuming you meant slower, the MkIII TC delivers faster and more precise AF, but that's only with the MkII supertele lenses, not the originals.

From the link neuro has posted, 1.4xIII is much sharper than 1.4xII at corners. At center both have almost equal sharpness.

I reasearched the differences between the ver 2 and ver3 TC for my 500mm f4 IS I and came to the same conclusion as the tests done in the link provided by Click. The contrast differences were very minor which I could adjust, if necessary, in post. The ISO 12233 crops on TDP also confirmed that the ver 2 of the 1.4x TC was slightly sharper than the ver 3. I couldn't justify the difference in price of about $200 for the ver 3 based on these test results and so I opted for the 1.4x II.

The ver 3 improvements would only be realized when using the TC with the 500mm II. My actual results confirmed my decision and I'm glad I did not spend the extra money for the 1.4x III.
