50D to .......?

Hi,

I'm the new boy in town, been reading the forum for years but now finally joined.

I have had a 50D since they first came out and love it to bits; however the time has come to get something newer. I use the camera for a wide range of subjects and have a few 'L' lenses. Attached is my Flickr if anyone is looking that closely at my uses.

I read all the Canon propaganda on new cameras such as the 5d mk 3 and the 7d.
Has anyone gone from the 50d to one of these?
Is the jump in technology that much more noticeable?
Is it worth the major investment? (and the week or so of wining and dining my wife before asking for one?)
If any has both and has some free time to show just how much the photos would vary I would be very grateful.

Well, for what it's worth, I went from 300D to 5D3... I love it. Lots t learn, but with it I can take pictures I just could not have earlier...

What do you need to acomplish? Unless you have something specific in mind, its not going to be worth a upgrade.
If you are going to FF, it will pay to plan for it in advance, since all your lenses will suddenly seem to be 1.6 times shorter, and and EF-S lenses will not work with a FF body. Then, if you can't afford to buy lenses and FF body all at once, start acquiring a minimum set of lenses you will need for FF, and by then, a new FF body will be available.
If going to a 7D, all your lenses will work, but its not going to give any big boost to image quality, rather, it has advanced autofocus, video, and a much better build.
So what do you value most?
Video? Landscapes?, Wildlife?, Sports?, Weddings? Family and Vacations? There is a different best model depending on what you do, and no one model is best at everything. Life is always a compromise, we make the best one we can.

Images - Animals, Landscapes, aviation and some sports.

I have 70-200 2.8 IS (mk 1) and 24-105 so should work on any body I believe.

The auto focus on the 50d is not as quick/ accurate as I would have hoped for.

My wife is going across the pond in a few weeks and has agreed to get which I choose.

I'm aware of the 1.6 loss going FF, however others have said that this is not to much of an issue for the higher MP.

The 22mp sensor of the 5D3 is the equivalent of a 13.75mp APS-C when you crop so you may see a bit of a difference.

The 70-200 will go from (appearing to be) 112-320 to actually 70-200. You'll need a 2x TC to make up for the loss of FoV that going from 1.6x APS-C to FF sensor. 7D is supposed to be getting a big firmware upgrade soon, it might make sense to go for that. The thing that FF will do better at, likely, is landscape. With it's nice big sensor you can get some fantastic super-wide lenses, although I believe the 10-22mm is great optically.

Thanks for the replays. I'm fully aware of the 1.6 loss in crop factor if I go FF. I'm interested more in the technology advances that a current camera would bring over my current 50d.

I went from 7d to 5d III - it was everything I hoped for and then some.

My 70-200 stays on the camera most of the time now where as it was an awkward focal length indoors At times - I mainly do portraits.

AF is very quick even in low light and high ISO images are amazing compared to the 7d.

If you can afford it go for the 5dIII - a very good investment IMHO.

I just upgraded from 50D to 5D3 & I can assure you its worth it. I kept my 50D since before I bought the new 5d3 I thought to keep it as a back up. I normally put my 24-105 on the 5d3 and my 70-200 IS II on the 50d for me to avoid switching lenses but most of the times I never get to use the 50d anymore. I have loved my 5d3 that I like to take every shots with it. Now I'm thinkin of selling or giving it to my brother and just buy a cheap FF as a 2nd cam.

When I had my 7D and 5D Mark II, I actually had picked up a 1D Mark IV for sports at the time too. So I ended up selling both the 7D and 5D Mark II for a new 5D Mark III. As the price will indicate to you, the 5D Mark III blows both cameras out of the water. It can do everything both the 7D and 5D2 can do, plus additional tools. If you have the funds, you won't regret it one bit. I liked it so much for what I was doing, I purchased another one.
