I am wondering if the guess is that the successor to the 5DMII will have the same AF system as the current 7D?

I bought and returned the 7D. I rented a Nikon D7000, and I was pretty blown away by the AF. I have a Rebel and I am ready to upgrade to a full frame camera, and I can wait for quite a while longer and just upgrade my lenses, as long as I feel like it is possible that I waiting for something... that isn't a full frame 7D. I know that is what a lot of people are really wanting, but it would not be what I would want. I don't want to start yet another argument about if the 7D is a good camera or not, I just want to know if rumors have primarily suggested that the AF from the 7D will go as it is into the next "prosumer" FF Canon camera.

I am fairly new to photography, and a lot of people have told me that you should never switch sides based on bodies, that Canon and Nikon will just kind of keep leapfrogging each other if you are patient enough. I am hoping that Canon just totally skyrockets as far as autofocus quality goes (closer to the consumer level), and pretty soon. There are many things I love about Canon, but that AF isn't one of them, and I am feeling like I am stuck and unable to upgrade anything due to not being able to get past that issue.

I have a 7D and a 5DII.

I would expect a 7DII and a 5DIII to have a version of the 1DX AF plus the Digic5 processor. When of course is another issue, but I doubt they will be in the shops for another year. I would be surprised if they merged the 5D/7D lines into a ff - there are just too many EF-S lens out there.

After a Rebel I am amazed you sent back the 7D - the AF is in a different league. The 5DII AF is very accurate, just a bit slower as is the fps.

May I ask what you found lacking in the 7D to cause you to return it?

Overall they're quite similar, each with advantages. Honestly, both are great cameras.

7D:
Better AF
Better video
More resolution
More FPS
Full magnesium body
1x viewfinder

D7000:
Video AF
Dual card slots
Better high ISO
