5D Mark III or 1DX? Money no object.

Personally, I love LOVE the 1D form factor. If you are going to carry around a big non-pocketable not a phone camera you should go big or don't bother. Crazy great battery life, let the rain fall construction and a grip that lets your pinky get in on the action when you are handholding a 400 2.8 lens that the geezers say you shouldn't.

That said, I'd take a 5DIII over the 1DX in a heartbeat. I'd even take a 1D4. Why?

The 1D4 puts more pixels on the distant object and it does it with great pixel level clean iso performance. The now sadly orphaned APS-H sensor size always had little man syndrome. It was a bit short but it always punched way above its pay grade to compensate. It out resolves even the 5D3. Oh, and it autofocuses (If you are in to that kind of thing) at F8 so if you throw an EF 2x III extender on your EF 600mm f/4 L IS II lens you can mash the button and get the shot.

The 5D3 has the same great autofocus system as the 1X, I'd expect same as-good iso performance and more pixels on the target in a body that can now take the rain.

Frankly I don't know who 1DX users will be, I guess there is a need 12 shots vs. 10 a second (or 14 without focus) demographic perhaps.

Hopefully time is no object. Another month and there will probably be some people who can truly compare the two and help us explain the difference.

If money is really no object, purchase me a 1Dx evaluation unit and I'll do the full review and give you a personalized report with your name peppered throughout. I might even return the 1Dx, eventually.

Both. I can't wait to try out a 1DX.. The 5dm3 will be my low light monster for the time being. Although I do like the feeling of the 1d bodies vs a 5d & 7d with the grip.

Money is no object:

Option 1: get the 1dx. I still think the iq will be a bit better, better iso, way better metering and likely better tracking in ai servo even if same af system as the mkiii...

Option 2: get both! This way you also have a smaller form factor camera with almost the same iq for when you need something smaller to carry or for travel...

The 1Dx is a different monster and system entirely. . . . . if you know what you are doing then get it. If money is no object then purchase the 1Dx, and a 5DmkIII as backup. All set. . . .

I "WISH" I have this problem :)

I love my 5D III. The new AF is AMAZING. This is my number 1 reason to upgrade from mrk II to III, plus all other features in 5D III of courses.

I don't shoot sport....so 6fps is more than what I need. I would rather use other half of money to buy some "L" lens.

If money was no object I'd get the IQ180

Personally between the 1Dx and 5d3 I chose 5D3 becasue I am trying to get away from Integrated battery grip cameras I dont need the added bulk.
the 5d size is just right for my uses.
you really need to look at what YOU need and base that decision on those reasons especially if money is no object, that may be true but if size is an object it eliminates 1 series bodies.

If money is no object you buy both and use the headphone jack of the 5D3 when you need it and the FPS of the 1Dx when you need that.

We will see how the sensors compare. The 5D3 will integrate better into video workflows although they crippled the video resolution by binning rather than downscaling, calling into question just how powerful this Digic5_+ really is. ::)
