As for firmware numbers, you should not much regard those. When the camera is released, it will be 1.something anyway. Pre-Production numbers can have any value...

Yet, who cares, they look great anyway ;)

So, when you see these pictures, do you like them? I mean, do you really like to see the red & green mud in all, 200 ISO included? I might not get the point here besides showing that the noise produced is of better quality than the 7D...

The noise in these pictures is made out of extremely fat vertical coloured bands. Not enough chaos in them, just fat 30px bands neatly lined up next one another. Doesn't look in the least bit like the RAW's we've seen, so I doubt this is representative of anything.

The images I've seen so far are soft (my 7D are sharper), I'm wondering with a lot of sub-par pictures out there, are we really seeing real 5DIII samples.

well i doubt it´s a camera issue.

i have made sharper images with my old 550D and the 18-55 kit lens back then.

images of my niece taken with the 550D show better eyelashes then i have seen in any 5D MK3 portrait picture yet.

so i think the shooters are just bad/medicore.

True the jpg are soft.

If you want to compare them with the Nikon you need the raw from both cameras and the correct raw converter.
Jpeg will tell us nothing.

Look at the original jpeg images from Canon when the 5d mark II was about to release.
Guess what ?
Also very soft. Well we all know what kind of images can be made with this camera.

I have to admit that your result with ACR is pretty good. However you develop sharpness digitaly by moving sliders, it doesn't come from optics and sensor. It looks good but imho in terms of sharpness and detail ND800 is far better (low isos of course) and resolution is not only a key for achieving this. Of course images developed by you are cr2 and are faaaar better than official canon samples, which as we all know look like from mobile phone. That is huge difference.
