5DMIII+70-300L w/ kenko tc or 40d+70-300L or 5d miii image cropped ?

Hi - Anyone with Kenko TC experienc, would you be able to suggest
Which one of these provide better iq and overall better ?
5D mark III w/ 70-300mm L with Kenko 1.4 tc
Or
5d mark III w/ 70-300mm L cropped
Or
40d w/ 70-300mm L (considering the 1.6x crop factor or APSC)

I have all the three except the TC. Wondering if it is worth spending the money on kenko when I have the other two options. I heard mixed reviews abt kenko when mounted on the 70-300

Hello, juste out of curiosity, did you compare the IQ of the 2nd and the 3rd solutions? Keep in mind that "reach" is about pixel density. A 5DIII image cropped to the PoV of a Canon APS-C sensor will have about 8.7MP, so a little bit more than a 30D image and a little bit less than a 40D's. I'd say that the 5DIII has slightly more reach than the 30D and a little bit less than the 40D, but a cropped 5DIII image should have better IQ than a 40D's, given the difference in technology .

The first option seems to be the 5D mkIII w/ 70-300L cropped. This is what you already have and it is a very good combination.
If you need more megapixels, a perfect match would be the Canon 1.4 convertor mkIII. The Kenko could be the weakest link. A very good 1.4 convertor is a vital element if you have already top quality equipment. I wouldn't consider the Kenko. I use the 1.4 convertor on many of my lenses (even macro).
The comparison with a 40D is something you can do by yourself: you have al the equipment to compare with the 5DmkIII cropped. I am confident that the 5D mkIII cropped will beat easily the 40d: I recently sold my 1DmkIII and my new 5DmkIII cropped is a lot better.
Any convertor added on a 70-300L could be a problem if you need a fast autofocus. Even with the promised firmware update. The 5DmkIII w/ 70-300L cropped is the best option.

The Canon 70-300mm L is not compatible with the Canon extenders, but is with the kenco.

TBH the IQ difference wont be day and night between the two in good light and low ISO.

But what will be very visible is the noise difference at higher ISO. The 40D is only just usable at 1600, 3200 forget it. So with the stops you will loose you will need to increase the ISO to compensate there the 5DMKIII will have an advantage.

TBH if you want more reach the best alternatives are the 400 F5.6 or the 100-400mm IS in the sensible bracket.

But you will get 480mm out of the 40D without the teleconverter. 672mm with a 1.4 extender.

My 5D2 cropped easily blows away my 40D and I would expect the 5D3 to be marginally better. If the 40D has enough resolution for your needs (web or up to 10 x 12 prints) then the 5D3 cropped will give the the absolute best bang for your buck.

Mostly true. The Canon fits the 70-300L at the longer focal lengths because the rear element group moves forward. The kenko would be usable for the entire range, but if you've already got a Canon 1.4x then it might not be worth getting a kenko just for this lens...

thanks. I did not get a chance to test the 5D MIII fully as I had to return the camera due to a download defect. I am waiting for the replacement to try out.
I had tried the 100-400mm L. I liked the IQ of that lens very much . But it is too big and heavy for me to use for day to day purposes. That is why I chose to go with 70-300MM L. the chance of using that one frequently is much more than 100-400MM (400mm 5.6L does not have IS. Based on my experience IS is very handy for me)
I guess I would play around with the camera when I get it (Again!!!) and decide. I dont think its worth for me to invest on Canon TC as none of my current lens collection is compatible I believe..

You don't use crop factor when you want reach, you need to go by pixels per duck. 40D is 10MP on APS-C and 5D3 is 8MP equivalent on APS-C, not that different. 70-300L+TC+5D3 def beats 40D+lens for reach, that said AF is a total mess with the kenko on that.

If you want reach a 50D/7D/etc. + 70-300L would do better than any combo you list.

The only way to go 40D + 70-300L. Forget the 70-300L on a 5D Mark III. Forget to crop in and forget the TC´s.

If you put a 70-300L or 24-70 2.8 II on a 40D or 350D then you can see, what these cameras are able to do.

I have all the latest TC´s and not happy with them. The 7D Mark II is very interesting to replace the TC´s.

The 5D3 will trash the 40D at any ISO above 400 where the IQ on the 40D starts deteriorating. At anything above 800 ISO the 40D's image starts losing detail whereas the 5D3 will cruise up to 3200 ISO.
