I took my 5DsR hiking over the Christmas break. Most of the time it lived on by 24-105 in my Crumpler "4 million dollar home" over my shoulder and clipped to by backpack. Once I scrambled up a slope with my camera on the strap over my neck and it hit a rock and cracked the cover over the rear LCD screen (see photo). I doubt if an aftermarket screen protector would have prevented the damage, especially as it looks like the impact was from the side.
The display functions perfectly (and now that I am used to the crack, it doesn't bother me), but I have two questions:
- Is the protective cover user replaceable?
That for the 5D2 was replaceable as there was an air gap between the cover and the LCD screen. I think that changed in the 5D3. I understand that the 5DsR has the same rear screen as the 5D3 (please correct me if I'm wrong).
- Will the crack be more vulnerable to water ingress?
I guess that if the cover is bonded to the actual screen and if the bonding material is not cracked (I presume it is more flexible), there should not be a problem.
I could apply an aftermarket screen protector, but I dislike them as they reduce clarity and contrast of the screen.
Thanks
