7D shutter speed fall off

I shoot Rodeo in evenings I have my 7d Mark II on AV and Auto ISO /1000 but I found that the ISO set at min 400 but I find that the shuuter speed drops to < 1/500 when ISO is at 16000. Not sure what Setting I have wrong that forces the camera down. I will say I start at 7pm and end at 9

It could be because of changing light.
Are you using spot metering or average metering?
Try changing your metering and see what happens.

If your auto iso range is maxed out at a given shutter speed some Canon cameras have a Safety Shift feature which will overwrite the settings to ensure correct exposure. If that is sat to shutter speed, it will indeed lower the speed no matter the lower limit. Perhaps it’s the Safety Shift?

Hi Ronald.
First did you mean ISO 16000 or 1600? I would think it must be nearly dark if you are up to 16000, not a big surprise it can’t sustain 1/1000s
It sounds like you might have the ISO range limits set to 400-16000 (or1600?), second red tab, it could still be that if you were expecting higher ISO’s!
It also sounds like you have safety shift enabled, it will ensure a balanced exposure if the settings are way off, not helpful in some circumstances.

Hi Graham, yes I ment 16000. in Auto ISO I had either 1/500 or 1/1000 shutter speen and ISO range from 400-16000. shooting outside in the summer, around 20:30 time the light is falling off fast. The arena has poor lighting. I checked and safety shift was "OFF" I will play around and see what I can find out.

I reached out to camera teacher and he said since I was in Auto ISO was maxed out and I was at 2.8 and something has to give.. thus the shutter speed.
