A new high end camera

In everyone's opinion, what are the chances of a high end 1DX mark II or another top of the line DSLR being available next year? The reason why I ask is because I am close to spending $4,000 on the new 5K iMac if a new camera won't be available until 2016. However, if we are talking early to mid 2015, then I might hold off on a new computer so I can get the camera instead.

It's hard to say. When B&h and adorama had the 6d for 1249.00 the other day it makes me wonder if something is in the works. The 5d3's and the 1dx's have been having good prices lately too. Canon really needs to release a high mp camera to compete with the d810 so those signs make me think we will see something before 2016

There's a 100% chance that the 1DX or 5D3 will be updated next year.

If Dilbert is wrong, he will refund in double the consulting fee you paid him.

1Dx is strongly positioned vs the D4s. Unless Canon wants to leap frog Nikon, I don't expect to see an update. If Nikon introduces a D5 then perhaps, though Canon seems to be slow to introduce new items recently. I think the got badly burnt when the rushed the 1D M3 to market with autofocus issues.

5DM3 is long in the tooth but sells well. They are milking it. Canon may layer new camera on top of 5D M3 (dare I call it a 3D or 4D) and collect $ from all of us.

Not sure if they will do any of this - I don't have a crystal ball (or at least one that works) and I am not a Canon insider.

Likely to see / hear about something next year but hard to tell what (or when).

It's certain we'll see new Canon dSLR(s) next year. The Rebel/xxxD line will see an update, possibly an SL2/150D as well. I'm not so sure we'll see a 5DIII or 1D X update. Both are very well positioned against the competition and the 5DIII remains popular. I think the FF release in 2015 will be a high-MP sensor in a low fps body, probably in a new series (but maybe a 5Ds).

You were 100% certain that the DIGISUPER 75 was a camera, too...just as a benchmark for your credibility.

DPAF has not shown up on Canon FF....
The 7D2 sensor shows some substantial improvements on what has gone before.....

I still think that Canon is going to close down it's old fabrication line and that as a result, there will be updates to all the DSLR's (except the 70D and 7D2) in the next few years... so it is very probable that the 1DX or 5D3 get updated soon.

Just what I thought, it is still pretty up in the air. I like the idea of a new FF, high MP camera with a new sensor to go along with my 1DX. In that case, a new computer would be a good idea. My 2010 iMac is still running strong since I upgraded the HD to a SSD, but I am not sure what it would do with much bigger files. I could always work with proxy files, but then I have to convert everything to DNG and that takes a while with 1000+ wedding photos.

I remember seeing rumors of the 5D3 and 1DS mk3 replacement for a while before their actual announcement. It seems like all we have seen so far is the probability of a high mp camera with possibly some kind of new sensor, but not a lot of other specifications. Even if they ended up being off, there were at least spec lists for the 5D and 1D series replacements well before their actual release. This is making me think nothing new is coming.

Canon has just recently announced its official sponsorship of the Rugby World Cup. So, I expect they would want to promote new products there as it would be the perfect stage for highlighting both their video camera lines, as well as action capabilities of their stills camera (7D-II and possibly 1D-X Mark-II)

OP: Since there is a lot of variable as to what ships when, worry about what you have in front of you. The 5k iMac is a beast - and while I want one personally, it's due to the 4k video I am playing with. If you're doing 4k video stuff now, then the new iMac gives you something you don't already have. Otherwise, wait a few months and see what's going on. No harm right?
