AF-Assist beam from Flashgun not working in Manual mode.

Hi

So getting ready for Chrsitmas day, I want the camera in a "grab it and go" condition for variable lighting conditions, so I want flash and AF-assist from the flashgun but this is driving me nuts.

here's what happening

1. Put my 6D into "green box" mode, YN600EX-RT attached, half press the shutter and I get the criss cross pattern of little red lines so the AF works in zero light conditions. (this means the flashgun works appropriately)

2. Put the 6D into M mode (which I want) and press the back button centre point selected AF and I get no grid. I've tried checking the custom settings for setting AF-Assist beam to "ON" and it is on. I've tried setting the AF back to "all points", and linking it back to the shutter button, but still no AF-assist.

Any ideas as to what I might have set that's preventing the AF-Assist beam from working?

TIA

Just to confirm, you're in One Shot AF and not AI Servo, correct? The AF assist does not operate in Servo focusing mode.

With my 1D X and Canon 600EX-RT, the assist beam fires when needed if I'm shooting in M mode.

Hi rfdesigner, Neuro.
It is amazing the simple things we can over look that can leave us perplexed to say the least.
It is good to have this great resource where there is easy access to people like Neuro who are so quick to offer the solution.
I hope to retain some of the things that I learn here.
Thanks folks.

Cheers, Graham.
