I doubt it...Canon would have at least considered it before the 40mm design and marketing plan... "So we already have three versions of the 50mm...we are probably gonna release an IS version of 50mm sometime soon... why not do something not already on the cluttered lineup and closer to the real normal?" And bingo, ya have a 40mm pancake.

Also, 40mm is closer to the flange to focal distance of 44mm for EOS cameras. A 50mm pancake would be less likely from that regard. Take a look at the EOS-M with a flange to focal distance of 18mm... the pancake for that system is 22mm because it is closer to the flange to focal than 40mm. If you had a 22mm lens for EOS cameras, it would be a lot bigger than a pancake... 50mm might be close enough but I think the closer you are to the flange distance the easier it is to engineer, and less materials would be needed to make the lens, hence 40mm makes more sense from an IQ and price standpoint.

I don't know much about the physics and science of optics, but the responses above sound pretty logical!

Also from a marketing standpoint, the pancake lens goes hand-in-hand with the smaller APS-C cameras, (ie an almost-pocketable DSLR!) and on a 1.6x crop camera, 50mm is too long for many people as general purpose lens. 40mm, on the other hand is a nice compromise between a standard view on both APS-C and FF.
