I just hope, for several reasons, that the rumor that a 7D Mk III will be announced in the next few months will prove to be true.
The first reason is that I think that many are waiting for an improvement of the 7D Mk II. Not that the Mk II is a bad camera, but competition has improved considerably since it came out many years ago. And the notation that better AF, better Dynamic Range, better Color Depth and some other features are quite well doable, is there. And growing.
For every cropped-body action photographer, wanting better performance is just a no-brainer.
The second reason is that I think Canon will do itself a (big) favor if it would once again strive to be at the forefront of innovations to improve e.g. AF and DR with a big step. That means: not a little bit better than the generation before, or just on par with thre competition, but in a revolutionary way with a big step at once.
This way, ‘
Canon’ could once again stand for innovation and wishing to please the customer.
Then all kinds of lingering doubts would disappear at once: no more thoughts that Canon wants to give its customers as little as they can get away with. No more doubts about the future of cropped-body DSLR’s, or even DSLR’s in general. A 7D Mark III with improvements where it counts for a camera aimed at action photography, would be in the interest of users like (but not restricted to) the ones using a cropped camera for action photography on this forum – and for Canon as well.
Of course, Canon helps nobody with a not-completely-finished product. So a 7D Mk III is better not rushed to market.
With this in mind, though, an announcement for the 7D Mk III early in this year could be fantastic news for many. It would be right in time for this year's 'action photography season'.
