<p><strong>4K For Real?</strong>

Various mentions lately that Canon is working on a real production 4K camera. This is beyond the concept they have shown previously at Canon Expo’s.</p>
<p>Lots of people would be obviously interested.</p>
<p>Most information seems to state it won’t be a DSLR, but instead a standard video camera.</p>

the concept camera in that picture was a small sensor camera, 1/3inch IIRC, so totally unremarkable and useless to most people actually interested in 4K video

Given enough light, you can do it with any size sensor. My 1080p camcorder uses three 1/4.1" sensors (one per color), which are about 3.2mm x 2.4mm in size. Double the width and height and you've almost got 4K. However, Super-35, which is reportedly the most common production size for feature films, is about APS-H size and anybody really interested in doing 4K will probably want that size sensor. For one thing, there are apparently a whole slew of very expensive, highly prized cinematography lenses for that size. However, if Canon's 4K camera has a built-in lens, like their XF100/105/300/305, then the sensor can be any size.

It's getting super hard to predict what Canon will and won't do because it's been so long since they've released any new tech, and they never give any specs. With that said, anything less than 1.6x crop sensor size, nobody will buy it. Small chip, fixed lens cameras are history.

I don't think Canon would do something that dumb, but yeah.... until Canon start releasing new technology again, it's impossible to predict.

Personally, I think it will be released in 2020.

If the quality can match that of professional HD-stuff, I'd expect people to pay 100k without blinking
However, the market for such is small, so most likely we'll see an APS-C camera, which is more than capable of producing decent images. The RED One has something close to that as well, and that (and Sony's new stuff) will be the main competition.

I wonder if Canon and their customers are aware of that. The XF300/305 are about a year old and the XF100/105 are essentially brand new models.

They might be a year old or less or even brand new, but as someone who has worked in TV commericals and promos in Los Angeles for the past 10 years, I can tell you first hand that I know of NOBODY who has a bought a Canon video camera in a long time.

But I do know plenty of people who shoot on the RED, the Alexa, the 7D and the 5D. Yes, interchangeable lens video cameras are the standard now. Fix lens video cameras (Thank God) are on the way out, and fast; at least in commercials and TV promos where a bit more artistry is required.

Once you give a video guy a taste of interchangeable lenses, they are not going back. That would be like asking a pro stills photographer to give up his 5D and use a rangefinder. Not likely.
