Canon 6D takes a lot of black pictures at a time

This is a bit unnerving but when I pop my card into the computer, I see a lot of black stills. This isn't the first time this has happened but it's like a span of around 400 photos at a time. just black stills. I didn't lose any photos. I just have an additional ~400. I pop the card back in my camera and yeah I see those black stills on the playback. What is going on?

The last time this happened to me with my 6D, it was because I left it in my backpack without remembering to switch it off, and it dutifully shot lensless pictures of the inside of the body cap whenever the shutter button got bumped. YMMV. :D

It happened again today! So I don't think it's the lens cap issue. but it consistently takes a little over 400 black shots. I don't lose any shots.. I have just a lot of black shots. This is annoying and I am worried it's adding up to be unnecessary wear on the shutter.

Something pressing the shutter button while the camera is stored seems most likely. Do you put it away on standby? Are the images before and after the black frames consistent with the camera being stored then?

Can you provide more detail? Does it take the 400 black shots by taking just one, pulling out the card and reading it, or is the shutter continuously opening and closing without anything pressing the shutter? Are mages numbered before or after the good shots, or interspersed?

A sticky shutter switch is a possibility. The shutter button depresses a switch in the camera ut is not physically connected to it, so the switch might be sticking, but the shutter button pops up normally.

If its a stuck shutter switch or one that occasionally sticks, it will have to be serviced.

Here is a link to a person who was using a 2 second delay and the sun hitting the IR receiver was tripping his shutter. It doesn't sound like your issue, but is interesting to read.

By posting the issue on the Canon forum, you may get a response from Canon, probably one that says to send it in.
