Canon 7D Mark II File Numbering Question

I need some help with the default numbering on my new Canon 7D Mark 2.

I just purchased this camera from a local Best Buy. I made to sure to verify that this was a brand new camera that had never been sold or returned. They assured me it was brand new.

When I finally got a chance to use the camera today I noticed that the first photo was numbered 8341. I expected this to be 0001 or something very close. I did use a an old CF card that was formatted for this camera as I am waiting for my new ones to arrive. I did go through all the menus before using and made quite a few changes. The numbering sequence is set up as "continuous" but I do not not know if this was the default setting or if I changed it to that. Does anybody remember the default setting for this?

I am starting to get concerned that somebody used this camera and returned it as unused and that Best Buy just put it back on the shelf. The battery was factory sealed and did have a piece of tape holding it closed. Nothing else appeared to have been opened and the camera really showed no signs of use.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The card is formatted starting with the last image on the card. Check your files. The last image you shot with the 7D was probably 8340!
p.193 of the full manual: Set camera to Manual Reset mode. Shoot one image. Format card in camera. Then reset to Continuous Mode. You will be off by the number of shots you shot before you reset.

I do this dance every time I send my camera in for repairs or cleaning. They grab a card with an unknown file number and test fire my camera. When it returns, it looks like someone had shot 2,000 images.

BTW: Do the math. 8,341 images is holding down the shutter at 10 FPS for almost 14 minutes. Possible but not likely. If it really bothers you, download and run the latest shutter count. I think it now supports the 7D MkII.

Enjoy your new camera!
