hi, sorry if it's been asked before, i'm a CR noob. but i'm trying to decide whether or not to buy the 7d, or wait for an upgrade, i don't have a desperate need for a camera right now as i'm on my gap year, but i will need one soon. i don't currently own a DSLR though and i want to go out and shoot. does anyone have any idea when a potential upgrade will be released (mk ii or 70d perhaps). i will need a camera in 3/4 months time though.

the 7d has all the features i need and more (i mainly shoot architecture and sports/movement). i've looked at other reviews and forums, some people are having issues with the AF on the 7d, i mainly use MF so thats not the end of the world but it is a concern. so should i go for the 7d with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens to start with, or should i wait and see what happens in the next couple of months, or is there another body i should consider? thanks in advance.

Hi, I wouldn't bet on the 7D II or 70D to be available in stores in only 3-4 months. Canon still doesn't sell the 1D X and just started selling the 5D III. So, I would not expect anything new to happen before fall.

If you mainly shoot in manual focus, you might want to have a look at the 60D or even the 600D depending on what your needs are and spend the extra money in some additional lenses (70-200 L).

Think about a refurb/used 7D - that way you will take less of a hit if the 7DII/70D and you decide to sell it

Canon's loyalty program has great deals on refurbs.. Find an old broken canon and trade it for a great price on a refurb. I'm not sure if we're supposed to post phone numbers here so PM me if you want the number.

Canon has said nothing that a 7D mark ii is even on the event list this year. And lets face it, It very well probably isn't. I wouldn't wait for something because of what people 'think' on this site. The rumor doesn't even have credit yet.

Used well, the 7D is a fantastic piece of equipment for the price you pay for it.

I've had my 7D about 18 months now, I'd still consider buying it again if I were purchasing something new now.

Timing-wise:
- The 7D2 may or may not be out by the end of this year. Don't expect one in your hand until at least January even if they do announce it this year. Also expect it to either be unavailable (if it's a decent upgrade) or not much of an upgrade to the 7D, and probably expensive either way.
- the 650D is just starting to be rumoured now, probably with the same sensor again, probably not in shops before August at least.
- The more you wait, the cheaper things will get, is there a regular mid-year sale in the UK?

- Specs-wise:
- I do a lot of MF on my 7D (like FL 55mm f/1.2). I just bought a KatzEye screen for it, which wasn't too hard to replace despite their warnings.
- Also consider the 60D for this. You can also get a KatzEye screen, apparently it should be even easier to replace. The 60D has the Pentaprism, 550/600D only have pentamirror, so darker and crappier viewfinders.
- Live-view MF is easy enough on the 7D. I know it looks gimmicky and I don't like it, but there are times I could really use that flip-screen on the 60D.

- Competition-wise:
- I hate to say it, but the Pentax K-5 has a lot of things that the 7D should have had included, for a 60D price. Including weather-sealed 18-55 kit lens, which doesn't work too badly.
- But you don't get to use Canon's great range of lenses, which is reason enough to stick with the Red camp.
