My 24-105 is very much alive, it's my core travel-lens that I couldn't do without (my travel kit typically consists of 17-40 f/4L, 24-105 f/4L, 70-300mm f/4-5.6L and a 35mm f/2 or 50 mm f/1.8 MkI).
For any other application where maximum flexibility is needed, the 24-105 is my go-to lens. Helped by good high iso there's nothing to replace it imho. I consider it my mega-zoom lens (within reason).
Note that I sold my 24-70 f/2.8 in favor of a Sigma 35mm. For such a limited zoom range I rather have the creative flexibility of a prime
