Canon EOS R5 Mark II Firmware Rumors & Speculation

I would also like to see the ability to activate pre-capture by utilizing the 'AF On' button (like Sony & Nikon) - not just the shutter button.

I wrote to Canon USA and received the following reply:

"The [Pre-recording] feature can be assigned to the [AF-ON] button in video mode. This cannot be done in still shooting, however. This option is found in the green menu tab #1. You should see [Customize buttons for shooting]."

So, it looks like I'll have to wait for a firmware update to get this function.

Did you ask about ‘Pre-Continuous Shooting’? Technically, pre-recording is a video feature. Regardless, pre-capture can’t be assigned to anything but the shutter button half-press currently.

Personally, I have pre-capture in some C# modes but not others, and I also use back-button (AF-ON) focus with the shutter button assigned to metering only.

Yes, my question to Canon was specifically about 'Pre-Continuous', but I guess they chose to cover all the bases by including info on 'Pre-Recording' (a feature I currently have no use for, as I don't do video).

For me, I have become accustomed to activating P-C via the AF-ON button since that's how my Sony & Nikon are configured, so I hope Canon makes this an option.

Having upgraded software in march I took my R5 mkii to the arctic, at temperatures of minus 18 to minus 28 it just shut down ( lasted about 5 images) changing battery for warm ones made no difference, someone else there had similar but less severe, nikon on Sony users were find. I have contacted canon (uk) having had unhelpful responses from first person I asked for a senior person- again he was uninterested and just went back to it’s only designed for use above zero. I have seen on other forums that this is not an isolated issue, but also seems to happen to some and not others.

Do you think that's from a firmware update? Seems more like a hardware issue but I could be wrong.

Also, are those temps in C or F?

Just curious. I haven't brought my camera out in cold temps yet. I live by Chicago. Super curious if firmware can cause these issues.

I was using my R5 in Norway/Sweden 18 months ago in -15C to -18C temps (no wind chill) and no issues... mostly on tripod ie not handheld.
I have heard of many people having no issues with the R5 in cold weather. Hopefully it isn't a design issue with the R5ii.

For night work, I use dew heaters for astro work to reduce condensation on lenses. The same principle could be used in your scenario assuming you are carrying a large powerbank inside your jacket. Just a thought.

Canon doesn't seem to follow conventional naming nomenclature for their firmware releases. R5's v2.0 didn't have much in it based on a full number increment.
That we can see, they might've overhauled the complete memory allocation framework or upgraded to a new version of dryOS. But I agree that from a user standpoint, the 2.x seems a bit overly dramatic for the changes delivered.

Hmmm...that doesn't sound good! The lowest I have operated the R5mkii has been around -2C. I am planning to take my gear to Antarctica and I suspect it will be far lower temperatures there even in December.

I have been having the AF issues with it with my RF400f2.8 lens in still photos mode as well as the AF jumping off in the midst of recording a bird video. My bird videos are never more than 30 seconds long and in between the focus would go wandering even when the camera is on a tripod and the bird is clearly visible in an high contrast scene.

Just disabled the power saving modes and will see how it performs.

will be firmware upgrades before December for sure.
dew heaters are cheap and small although you might need a 2nd larger one for the lens if you get condensation on the front element.
larger powerbanks like my Anker 737 (24WHr) are easy to travel with and last a long time. get a 2-3m long charging cable for handheld (powerbank in jacket). You can even power the camera and dew heater at the same time :)

Some users have reported that reset the camera to factory settings and then turning off power-saving mode can be helpful. You can try saving all the settings to the card, performing a factory reset, and then reloading the previous settings from the card.

Excellent! Thanks. Do you have a recommendation for a dew heater that you used and like?

Thanks for the suggestion. I use three custom settings (C1-for high speed continuous full sensor bird shooting, C2-cropped sensor mode high speed continuous, C3- single shot) and then I have them set in two separate configurations saved on the CF card - Bright Light conditions and Low light conditions (exposure compensation and slightly lower shutter speed). But, for now, I just disabled all the power savings and hopefully will be able to test drive this in Iguazu this weekend in real life conditions. Will report back on how it performed.
