Canon EOS R5 Mark II user feedback and discussion

Another question came in my mind:
I own some Godox V1cstrobes, that I control by an wireless flash controller (Xpro2C) with the old hot-shoe-design. Will this work on the R5II when I´ll put the Canon adapter between the r5II and the wireless flash controller?

My initial reaction, though, was that the new metering is off by my (!) eye - but that's coming from a two-hour test drive of mine and scenes with a setting sun. Don't sweat it, we'll be fine ;-)
The expansion should give some benefits. I guess more balanced metering of the scene. I am using Evaluative metering about 80%. So it is interesting to see what benefit it will give. There is still little info available about this subject. It is mentioned by TDP (The Digital Picture) but not in testcases. Well, I guess I have to wait for that. Thanks for the reply.

Can someone check for me to verify my experience - The eye controlled AF and the shutter are all slower/less responsive on old batteries (even the ones launched with the R5) vs the new type.

I had not seen this mentioned anywhere before i picked up my copy yesterday.

Short outing, it focused perfectly on herons, storks and kestrels. With the R5/R7/R8 I had the feeling it slightly misfocussed on herons, the R5II has the eye perfectly in focus.
I still haven’t figured out how to enable FTM override in video mode, but I did manage to get some 4k120 footage of the kestrel and dragonfly.

Not owning a R5 II, but can still share this:
- Wish the body/size/ergonomics were more in line with the 5D series. Those cameras were really nice in that regard

- Wish it had a built-in GPS: those who don't need it could have turned it off and save battery life if that's an issue for them. But for travel photography, especially in remote places where a smartphone is useless anyways, it's great. And even in non-remote places, I don't need/want to have a smartphone with me all the time (and bluetooth pairing is not always working well).

Just my opinion.

I concur 100%! I have a Garmin 7X that receives 3 or 4 systems. The receiver and antenna has to be very small so why isn't something similar in the mirrorless cameras? Maybe licensing the technology is the reason. Similar complaint about HEIF files not being processed on most of the processing software and maybe the same reason.

Got mine yesterday as a somewhat belated birthday present (yay, happy me!).

The battery situation is a clusterfuck like nothing else. All my local dealers in Germany have received zero (!) additional batteries, no online retailer has them, too; with it being a necessity for pre-shooting and the likes, and at a €119 retail price, a costly mistake for canon to make so early.

Happy Belated Birthday!

But yes, the battery situation is an absolute cluster F!

At 6PM on the 19th, i got payment declined on all my accessories (battery grip and 2 batteries) and regardless how many cards i used, it said they all got declined (although it took the payments after checking my bank statements). So as an immediate rush, i ordered two additional batteries but was able to use PayPal instead of card (Even though PayPal is using the same card).

So now I'll have 4 batteries total arriving on Tuesday and one additional battery i ordered through Canon USA.

I received the BG-R20 (the ‘ normal’ one) today. Canon has moved the joystick position (compared to the R5/R6 BG-R10 grip). You no longer have to bend your thumb down to use the joystick when using the camera in vertical/ portrait position. With the new grip you can easily use your thumb to operate the AF-On button or the joystick.
The magnify button has moved to about the middle of the grip.

I tested it with my v1pro and works fine in every mode not sure which trigger I have (got it 3 years ago, then it was the most recent model) but it also worked with ad600pro in every mode. I even managed to use it with electronic shutter in hispeed sync.
Hope that helped

Additional thing today the R5 froze actually not froze but the screen when it exited the standby mode showed black frame. Everything worked but the image on the live view and when I pressed record was totally black. And the recorded file was not actually recorded.
Hope that they will resolve that one but the similar bug really didn’t help on the R6mk2 where the camera acted similar in photo mode.

I don't know if it's about license since they put it in the 5D Mark IV and it's also present in the R1 and R3.

It's quite impressive to see how Garmin managed to fit it in a watch. So there sure is room in a camera.

Having a Garmin watch that constantly tracks my position and writes it down in a GPX file while traveling is my only option if I want to be sure to be able to geotag all my travel pictures. But having to add and extra $800 or so in such a watch just for that feature whereas the camera could have done it is a tough swallow.

I remembered seeing something similar to your description of the 'freeze'. It was in the R6MII firmware 1.4.0 'problems fixed' list, The firmware and that description is on this site. You want to look at it and see if that's what you experienced.

Two question to those who own the R5 mkII and the RF 100L macro:
1.) It is possible to show the SAC value in the display. Is it also registered in the EXIF?
2.) Is it possible to change manually the focus in servo mode if enabled ( manual page 567)?

I couldn't tell a difference, the picture speed seemed fine. At the least I could not tell.

biggest pain point for me with old batteries is no bluetooth, (I thought I read just no wifi) which in hindsight makes sense because wifi/bluetooth are on the same chip a lot of the time.
