Canon has released Canon EOS R5 Mark II Firmware v1.0.2

I guess I have always done it wrong. I just load the firmware to my SD card and put it in the camera. I do not think I've ever had a lens on but have always have 2 cards in.
You have done nothing wrong, the update to firmware version 1.0.1 worked with two cards in the camera (as did all of the R5 firmware updates).

Edit: The firmware update instructions do not include having only one card in the camera. According to the instructions, accessories (Lens, Speedlites, "and all other accessories") must be removed.

I could not update until I used only an SD Card, no CFExpress. Only then would it let me update from the SDCard to 1.0.2 from 1.0.1
That strange, I updated my R5 Mk II from a CFE card once I removed the SD card so there was only one card in the camera. As I stated in an earlier post: Canon will probably provide a bugfix for this ‘feature’ in a next firmware update.

And I left the lens on, despite Canon's recommendation, because I was too lazy to read the instructions.
But it worked nevertheless.
