Canon has given some new insights into its compact camera plans in interviews held during CP+ 2026 in Yokohama, Japan, as reported by DPReview. In one of the most important statements given to DPReview, Go Tokura, Canon's Executive Vice President and Head of Imaging Group, was quoted as saying, The current customers of compact cameras […]

I'm very curious what they could bring to the market.

I've also noticed that I would want it to be quite small and somewhat well-priced, because at Fuji X100 sizes and prices adding an R8 to use with my RF28mm F2.8 is cheaper and more versatile; and that package isn't that much larger than the Fuji.

I think this is made even more compelling due to the lack of weather sealing on the Fuji X100 and also Ricoh GR series. If they added proper weather sealing that could convince me to buy a dedicated compact camera in the same size range as the R8 and even at a slightly higher cost.

Granted, this doesn't help those customers who prefer 24 mm or 35 mm in focal range.

Or, hear me out, Canon could revive what was one of the best compact systems of all time--the M series. Of course that ship has sailed, but the way that company handled that system was such a lost opportunity.

The way technology trends come and go, such as film cameras having a comeback and vinyl music selling like crazy, it'll probably just take a few influencer or YouTube who state "they absolutely love the old, little M-cameras made back way then..." and boom: the m-system will be back :) of course, keep your cameras now because prices will climb like crazy :) Just kidding here, but "proof-reading" it I thought: I might be right here :ROFLMAO:

Would love an updated G9X2. Put it in your jeans pocket and you will forget about it. Great for concerts, love the orange screen info "dark mode". Wish it was a little faster though at everything like my RX100VA but that makes a big visible bulge in my pocket... and takes forever to start.

one thing i hope canon recognizes that it needs to look good. lots of steel. lots of metal. lots of metallic. stop with the black plastic blobs.
Totally. Canon has done that before, like when they touted the “Front part of the zoom ring sports a silver ring for a luxury touch,” in reference to that amazing lens the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III. But stingy Canon hit that awesome lens with the cripple hammer and removed that luxury touch when they re-released the lens with an RF mount. :ROFLMAO:

Personally, I prefer the lighter weight of the ‘engineering plastic’ used in many current L-series lenses, and the lenses feel good in the hand and don’t end up with paint chip ‘decorations’ all over.

I thought they did a bang up job with the M5, G5X & G1Xiii. The mini tank/dslr style worked pretty well for those of us with larger mitts. I'd like to see a return to that form factor. Engineering plastic is fine just give me a viewfinder please! 1 inch stacked sensor, the V1 lens but just 2.8, a tilty flippy...hmm, this thing is getting chubbier by the moment.

I am probably an outlier, but I wish for a Spatial Video compact camera. I think Canon had a VR180 prototype in the past, but I wish for something along the lines of an all-in-one RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual Lens—with a body situation. Not long ago, Canon partnered with Apple to support the Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) within Canon’s VR ecosystem. I’m in this space myself, so here’s to wishing…

I’m not a mechanical type person, so I don’t know for sure if some parts of my G7X III are either metal or engineered plastic. Specifically, the control ring, on/off button, shutter release button, EV exposure offset dial and mode dial. On a coin toss bet, I would say metal.

There are some very fine details in either knurls, crosshatch knurls or ‘concentric rings’ in the mentioned parts.

To put things into perspective, on my attachment, the white silkscreened index mark is ~0.03 inch (~0.76 mm) wide on the short dimension. (I have a steel ruler with 1, 0.1 and 0.01 inch (25.4, 2.54 and 0.254 mm) tick marks. I’m nearsighted with a -7 diopter prescription and can clearly see the 1/100 inch tick marks with my eyeglasses off.)

Someone should make a better pocket size camera - bring the OM Tough concept to the next level. Why not Canon? On backpacking trips, caoeing, skiing and more I always have my OM tg-7 handy, even if I most of the time also bring a system camera (R5ii). A large portion of my best pictures is taken with the compact - just because its always ready, independent of the weather and the situation. It`s a long time since I had a small Canon in my pockets. Olympus/OM has done a great job, but I miss a camera with higher image quality. Why not Canon, there must be a marked out here.

I hope an update on the 740hs with bigger sensor and with raw and all weather sealing.
Or a new G5 with zoom of a 740hs and bigger sensor and raw, that would be the absolute best compact camera to have.

All we can do is wait and see what canon comes up with

I am very interested by this camera. I have been looking at the Fujifilm X-E5 which I love. But I am in the Canon ecosystem, my main camera is an R5 and I also use an R7. So this would be the small cary in my kit. I need it to be photo-centric with proper zoom range for that (24-120mm type of range), an EVF, a tilt screen, and ideally the old R7 (mark I) sensor or something of that quality. Weather sealing would be very welcome as well. I hope it will not be another creator camera.

i wonder what a "new" customer looks like from canon's point of view. more likely females in their mid 20's than the canon/sony-istas reading the blog. what do they want?
