... Seems the sort of solution I'd welcome as a printer and ink salesman, well that and someone who has a 'summer residence' ;-)

Seriously though, not a solution I'd ever suggest.
You want 17" and portable, get an Epson P900.
Don't want Epson? Tough, time to re-evaluate your requirements ;-)

I do appreciate the warnings about ink and moving it every year. I'd rather avoid making a truly regrettable purchase in this/my unusual case.

You mentioned the 17" - portable - Epson P900. It seems to be a nice printer from a cursory look at it. Is there something special about this one that does not have the same worries about ink usage with my use/disuse case?

The ink cartridges remain tiny at 80ml so that’s a pass.
