For some this is a niche lens ofc. For me, it's the dream astro landscape lens. And it finally might have the resolving power that the 45MP sensor deserves in UWA

Fast/wide lens haven’t been a priority for canon in the past… a f2 zoom would be novel though. I’m uncertain about the benefit of a f2 zoom in this range vs a prime for Astro though. Either a 14mm or a ~20mm f1.4 would be great and probably both for the cost of a f2 zoom.
Canon did surprise with the weight /size of the rf10-20/4 so who knows what might be released.

I suspect that the lenses in the patent application will require a decent amount of software correction as well, which might not fit astro photography.

2021. Canon released the RF 50/1.8 and RF 70-200/4L on November 4th 2020, and then nothing for 5 months until April 14th 2021 when they launched the R3, RF 100L, 400L, and 600L.

Canon's last announcement was November 2nd 2023, so I would expect some announcements in April.

Otherwise, I believe they have announced an ILC or lens in January/February/March every year since 2010 except this year and 2021.

At our local camera store house fair I did ask the Canon guy when the big anouncement will be (of cause he won´t tell me a date).. His response was "not this year - next year" to which my response was "Oh that will not make us professional sports shooters happy".

"Canon does not care and you will see" was his response...

First... bad customer service (journey) at an fair Canon... bad! Not the answer he should have given (and before people write, I am aware he maybe gets this a dozen times asked before, doesn´t make the answer better)
second... if really not this year: even worse!

I am still no UWA guy. So I am happy that I don't have to count coins because of this.
But I am very much interested in the optical performance of such a lens.
So Canon, please bring it just for my curiosity and - of course - for all those wanting it

I am a UWA guy, but without a need for speed. An f/4 UWA is fine for me. I had the EF 16-35/2.8 II and <1% of my shots with it were wider than f/4, so I switched to the EF 16-35/4, then added the EF 11-24/4 for an even ultrawider UWA. Have since switched to the RF 14-35/4 and 10-20/4 and am happy.

No need for an f/2 UWA. Now…an f/2 short tele, 70-150 or 70-200, to pair with the 28-70/2, that I’d buy.

I'm in the same boat. That said, if such a lens came to market, I'd favour it overs the 10-20 f/4 because it could be very helpful for interior shots where lightning is usually poor. Would save me from cranking up the ISO.

100% agreed! I would be an early buyer of this lens For sure. I would replace my Sigma 14 and 21 mm lenses for Astro if the corners were solid.

Hmmm. My interior shots need the entire room to be in focus. So I take the easy way out by using a tripod. At times I also use focus bracketing, stitching etc. I recommend these techniques. ISO 100 is my choice when shooting interiors.

I'd be interested in the 12-24 2.8. It would fit nicely in a 2.8 trinity w/o overlapping the 24-70/105 2.8 so much (yes, I'm a bit anal-retentive).
