If it is a new lens that never existed before then do you really "need" it?

Agree. I really like the RF 100-300 mm f2.8 because with TCs I get three lenses in one: 100-300 mm f2.8, 140-420 mm f4, 200-600 mm f5.6! I used this lens extensively with the 2X TC in Alaska with the R3 and it worked flawlessly with brown bears finish for salmon.

I shot it wide open at f5.6 and was still very content with the results. Maybe not ideal, but I was content with the results.
