This is good to hear. I'm confused now why the manual would make it sound like it simply wouldn't work on the new R52.

FWIW, I have used Godox for years, and find them good, but always found color and ETTL a bit inconsistent, but workable. However, just got an EL-5 for my R50 (and future cameras). It's great, and has better color and exposure. Best of all, it was $149 from Canon's recent refurb sale. So far I like it better than the Godox V1 I use with my R5.

Took me a bit to do because I never use these functions myself! All these scenarios seem to be working totally as expected. Managed to run them in separate groups and have one ettl, one manual. 2nd curtain worked with this as well. Tried everything with mechanical and ES. All worked as expected. One thing I did notice that doesn't work is that you can't change the settings and custom functions of the flash from the camera, like you can on the R5 MkI. So that might be an issue for some people?

The R3 manual says the same thing. It's wrong. All the normal flash functionality is there. Just look at the hotshoe on the R5II, it has the same pin connection points as the pins on your EL-1. The new flashes have a flat plate there, the communication is all via the row of gold contacts that looks like a big Apple Lightening connector.

There is also a Canon UK trade show interview on youtube back when they announced the new hot shoe and there they said also you need the adapter, but yes as pointed out by a few here the digital hot shoe supports all the same flashes you used before.

The exception is the R50, which has only the new contacts and not the ones for old flashes. For that one camera, the AD-E1 adapter is needed to use old-style flashes.

I've always changed flash custom settings directly on the flash anyway, so that last part will not really affect me personally.
I'm glad Canon didn't just dump all the EL-1 buyers.

That's a very helpful image. I've never used a camera or accessory with the new mount/contacts. Good to see backwards compatibility!

Indeed, the EL-1 is a great flash, a real workhorse for a pro. I also own an EL-5. Why stop?? So, a Mark2 or not? A great benefit not relying on AAs or external battery packs.

I do as well and also think it is a great flash. I have read that many people have issues with it but have never experienced them myself, though I do not use it very often.

I wonder how many people actually use Canon flashes. Lately I haven't been seeing any at all. I know one guy that got an EL 1 years ago and he complained about it. Most people I know or seen today use Godox and a few use Profoto.

It still works fine with the R5 Mk II and the EL-1. So far I haven't found any reason for the adapter beyond using the camera in the rain.

Might depend who you look at. Anyway today if you're not tied to a specific camera brand, and you're heavyly invested in remote flash photography, a third party flash system allowing just switching the master transmitter only to change camera may be a better choice. With the availability of cheap TTL alternatives like Godox for those who don't want to spend too much, trying to sell flash units like the EL-1 at a price point where more powerful and versatile systems like Profoto and others can be bought, looks to me a recipe for low sales. Changing the flash socket contacts may help only for a short time - while third party units need to be supported anyway, or Canon camera would become useless in any kind of studio light setup.
