Canon to Merge Two Lenses Into an RF 24-70mm f/2L IS?

Make it a 35-85/2L and I'd seriously consider leaving Sony for Canon (again)
Good idea because some of us do not need the widest end very often but like to have some standard portrait capability or tighter perspectives in landscape etc.
For me a 35-105 f/2.8 would be the preferred combination, maybe with 1:3 closeup and excellent IQ.
16-35 → 35-105 → 100-400 comes in mind. Tamron has one but not for Canon.

The RF24-105/4 is the lens i use most since i have it. I did not expect this. The reason is meanwhile clear for me, it is small and lightweight.
Yes, a very versatile lens with good IQ except wide open @ 100mm near MFD. On the other hand it does not rely on computational work to deliver which would be critical with a 24 MPix sensor IMO.
And the noise it makes while zooming makes it a little bit underwhelming for video.

It's weird. I'm not excited about any lens or camera rumours lately. I think... I think I am happy with my stuff? Is this what some people call getting rid of GAS?
It's called finding fulfillment in other aspects of you life. I develop GAS when there is a particular photographic problem that I want solved and my current equipment won't do it. My current problem is that I'm old and getting weaker and I want lighter stuff. I'm almost there.

Another zoom? I’m sure it will be optically excellent, and I understand why so many photographers are excited about it.

Personally, my credit card and I will be sitting on the sidelines waiting for Canon’s next generation of stills-first halo primes.

The RF 135mm f/1.8L showed what Canon can do when the design goal is maximum image quality, wide aperture, and excellent handling. I’d be far more excited by a new RF 100mm f/1.4L portrait lens, a redesigned RF 50mm or 85mm f/1.2L II, or a new fast wide-angle prime.

Canon already has a pretty strong RF lineup and I am glad they are challenging Sony with new F2.0 zooms. What I hope they don’t lose sight of is the aspirational role halo primes play in defining the system and inspiring photographers. I’d hate to see Canon cede that part of the market—or the high-resolution bodies needed to fully exploit it—to Sony and medium format.

Just my two cents.
100% This!

I think the second this ru,oured rf 24-70mm f2.0 LIS is announced with it's rumoured focal range, lighter size and smaller weight improvements....I can see a lot of 28-70/2.0's hitting the used market instantly! As long as Canon are smart with the pricing...Canon isn't going to be able to make enough of them to meet demand!

As it's been already said, there are actually quite the lot of lenses in this range so it seems not so reasonable to hope for something different than the multiple offers on the market.
I've not yet had the opportunity to try out the RF24-70 but I'm often quite amazed of my RF70-200/4 over my RF24-105/4, I would be interested in a 24-70II shaving a bit more weight but no free lunch yada yada

I would really love to see a 20-120mm f4 ideally L series landscape/ travel lens. just something a wee bit longer and wider than the 24-105mm f4 i have! Bigger faster lens dont overly apeal for my work… something light weathersealed and of quality is more important for me and i suspect many others

That would make a great spiritual successor for the RF 24-105mm F4 L. While I do believe going longer will eventually happen with successor for this lens, I doubt it will be wider. 24-120mm is a five-times zoom, 20-120mm would be a six-times zoom. I think there hasn't been a six-times L zoom with the exception of the EF 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 L zoom. And the reports its quality weren't really favorable. In addition, the difference between 20-24mm is really difficult to achieve, it is much more work than "just 4mm wider" would suggest. Lastly, I do believe Canon could deliver a 20-70mm F2.8 in order to differentiate from the rumored 24-70mm F2, but I don't believe "20mm is the new 24mm". If Canon would upgrade all zooms starting at 24mm with a 20mm replacement, they'd surely cannibalise their UWA zooms. We know Canon doesn't like to do that.

I would love that too. The perfect travel lens. Currently im interested in the 20-50 but might be a bit too short to replace the 24-105.

This is a zoom I would certainly never buy.
Extreme stretching the focal range of a zoom comes at a cost, namely optical quality.
We already have heard and read multiple times that a high-IQ zoom stretching from WA to short-tele (24-70) is already hard to design.
Keep on dreaming, but keep your feet on the optical ground! :)

Interesting. Find it hard to imagine selling my 28-70 f/2. It has captured so many beautiful moments in my growing family’s life. Rarely if ever feel it’s not wide enough for events and the likes. Don’t mind the weight too much for the times that I use it. Would have been more interested in getting the best/lightest 24-70 f/2.8 Canon can make to complement it. Hmmm.
