Canon's APS-C sensor versus the competition

We all know that Canon's sensor tech is not getting rave reviews these days, but this is not about the sensor tech, but the sensor SIZE. All FFs have same size, but APS-C varies across companies.

Canon's APS-C is 10% smaller than its competition's. So, for Canon's crop cameras to be on the same playing field as the competition, they will have to have better sensor tech.

In the supermarket the other day I noticed the Wolfgang Puck brand pasta sauces are packaged in 16 oz. jars. Most of the other brands are in the 24 oz range. Seems like a lot less coverage on the same amount of pasta. Is it possible the Puck sauce is just that much better?

It's a pretty good strategy, actually. What were the prices on the shelf tags for the pasta sauces? I'm betting the Puck sauce was similarly priced, despite being lower volume. More profit for Wolfgang to take to the bank. 'Quart' juice bottles are now 15 oz., but no cheaper, more profit, or in many cases counteracting higher raw material prices to maintain profit).

Likewise, more sensors per wafer means more profit for Canon.

It might be closer with this next round of products if Nikon continues to inexplicably put that 24mp sensor into everything they have. The 16mp was tremendous but apparently both Sony and Nikon decided it was getting long in the tooth - you can now get a D5100 or NEX 5N for practically nothing while they clear out stock. If Canon can produce a sizable improvement in the 7D2 sensor then the playing field could be level or even swing the other way quite easily.

Edit: the D7000 for under $1000 new is an absolutely amazing deal! If I hadn't already blown a chunk out of my bank account with my current kit then I would be all over that.
