Canon's Holy Trinity 2015

Should be the best of the best which in my opinion is ...

Zoom trinity - 11-24 f/4L, 24-70 f/2.8LII, 70-200 f/2.8LII

Prime trinity - 35LII, 85LII, 135L (this is what I thought the holy trinity was with old 35L)

Sports trinity - 70-200 f/2.8LII, 100-400LII, 200-400L 1.4x

But then there are the lower ranking trinities such as ...

F/4 trinity - 16-35, 24-70, 70-200

EF-s trinity - 10-22, 17-55, 60mm macro

Thrift-inity- 10-18 STM, 18-55 STM, 55-250 STM

This question might produce as many diverging answers as the original attempt to define the Trinity.

For me, it's the F4 Zoom Trinity:

• 16-35 F4L IS
• 24-70 F4L IS
• 70-200 F4L IS

I also note that they are three separate and distinct lenses, but one in Aperture.

The 70-200/f4L could just as easily be replaced with the 70-300/f4-5.6L.

Maybe in your belief system's Trinity. :-X

Why on earth would I want the 70-200/f4L IS USM over the 70-300L?

The 70-200 is physically longer, making it harder to keep in camera bags, smaller focal length range meaning you need to use an extender to get > 200mm and the IQ is inferior.

I'll leave the trinity to the divinity folks. I've been successful over the years with a duo - a 35mm and an 85mm in various models. I've been tempted by a 28 or a 24, but always go back to the 35. The 85 is fine for most shots and so far I can move a few steps for a 50 or a 135 perspective. I have been tempted to ditch them both for a 24-105 but it's just not fast enough and if it were, it'd probably be too big.

Well, I'll chime in on what I would like to see in my collection and what would be my trinity if I had a full frame camera:

Prime: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II, Canon EF 135mm f/2L, Canon EF 200mm f/2 L IS

Zoom: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II (Yeah, I know it is a prime.)

I did consider the new Canon 11-24 f/4L zoom but I am of the mind that a wide tilt/shift lens would be more advantageous to me. I would also love to have the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II.

With all that said, I feel very fortunate to be diving into this hobby at this particular point in history due to what appears to be a "Golden Age" for Canon lenses and digital photography in general. If one takes his time with lens choices and gives himself a few years to assemble a kit... he almost cannot go wrong can he? I just hope I live long enough to meet those goals and that I have a grandson or granddaughter that will appreciate the hobby.

3 amigos (my most used/loved): 14mm Rokinon, 24-105L, 400L 5.6

On trip right now with:

- 17-40 (maybe not perfect in corners but a lot less weight and cheaper than 16-35 - although my GAS says I want a 16-35 f/4 real bad )
- 24-70 f/2.8 ii (I just can't part with my 24-105 but I have not used it at all since getting this lens)
- 100-400 mkii (never would have believed I'd be glad to have sold the mki but wow!)

Is this a trinity? Yes. Is this holy? Who knows. Were I trekking on this trip, the 70-200 f/4IS is a whole lot less weight and size than the 100-400 but without the reach. Then there is the 14mm Rokinon that could replace the 17-40. I think I am going to just shoot that 14 f/2.8 for a while when I get home to see if that changes my "lens religion"

My traveling trinity is

Canon 16-35mm F2.8
Canon 24-105mm F4
Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6

Found it to be a great trinity, lightweight and covers 90%.

Ive just swapped out the 70-300mm for the Tamron 150-600mm for africa May take the 70-300mm too on days when I don't fancy carrying the Tammy.

There's a lot you can cover with that which is why it's my go to travel kit. The 50 STM has proven very useful so far and takes up almost no weight (relatively speaking!) so it's kinda like a bonus lens in the bag. I almost never take three zooms or three primes, I find it's more useful to have a mix of primes and zooms.

my 3 favorite at this time is the 10-22 ef-s 70-200is4l and the 400 5.6l lens with a 1.4 mk3 tele
yes only one with is but I can do uwa landscape to birds in flight with my 70d
