EF 17-40 Indoor foto????

I hope you can help me.

I am planing to buy a Canon 6D, which can take good fotos, at a very high ISO.

I want a Ultra Wide Lins there can take fotos indoor (family reunions and inside churches, castles etc) whit out flash and hand held.

Can the EF 17-40 do the job or do I have to buy the EF 16-35II.

The quality of the EF 17-40 is fine for me, so I will only buy the EF 16-35II if the EF 17-40 can not do the job.

I know you say that you want ultra wide, but if you want to shoot inside castles and churches without a tripod I would strongly recommend a lens with IS, even with the 6D's high ISO capabilities.

The default choice is the 24-105 IS or maybe the Tamron 24-70 VS. Or maybe consider the new 24mm f2.8 IS.

+1. IS would be nice for these types of applications. Cranking up the ISO loses a lot of detail.

if people are going to be present in the shots and you want quality results of the people then you are really almost required to incorporate flash in the scenarios you describe. even at the high ISO capabilities of recent cameras, F4 is still pretty slow and F2.8 offers really shallow depth of field.

you need to be more specific about what it is you are hoping to do. is it primarily interiors you are interested in? if so you can forgo the flash but only a tripod will offer the guarantee that you will have successful results in low light situations of interior spaces. IS could help but as you can see from Sporgan's reply a tripod is by far the preferred method.

whatever may be the case for you, i personally would not bring an F4 lens into a shoot where i knew there would be extreme low light. F2.8 would be the minimum and i would probably want to have F1.4 glass preferably. especially if i knew that i could not use a tripod and i could not use a flash.

The 17-40L can take photos indoor handheld without flash, but it will often make the camera jump up to ISO 12,800. I'm using a 5D3. If I were shooting indoors a lot and needed a zoom I would consider the 16-35L II instead. The same ISO 12,800 shot at f/4 on the 17-40 would be ISO 6,400 shot at f/2.8 on the 16-35. If you are almost exclusively indoors and still want to shoot handheld with no flash, and don't mind giving up zoom, you'll want to go with a fast aperture prime lens such as the 24mm f/1.4L. The same ISO 12,800 shot at f/4 on the 17-40 would be ISO 1600 on the 24 prime at f/1.4. In this situation you're trading sensor noise for lower depth of field though.
