it says "Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Cleans the lens contacts."

i literally just got this lens with my 5d mark iii today. its not the 5d because i tried other lenses with it. i also had problems with a refurbished flash i bought from Canon also. last thing i'm buying refurbished from Canon, they lost my respect and trust.

does anyone know if i can fix this on my own, or should i just call them tomorrow and return the defective product.

thanks in advance.

Hi there, last week had the same error on my 24-105 which I've had and put to good use over the last 7 years. I tested on other bodies and it was definitely the lens. It was also making a funny crunching type of sound when searching for focus before it would go into the error message "Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Cleans the lens contacts.". I took it in for repair and they came back to me with this:

Report: TO DISMANTLE THE LENS REPLACE THE DIAPHRAGM ASSY. ADJUST THE UNIT AS
REQUIRED. CLEAN AND LUBRICATE THE MECHANISM AS NEC. REASSEMBLE, CARRIED OUT
STANDARD FOCAL AND RESOLUTION TESTING.
COST: A$423.50

I thought long and hard about it, since I am anxiously waiting for the 24-70 II but I bit the bullet and had it repaired. The lens is working beautifully again.

I have the same issue with a Leica 35-70 F4 and Canon adapter with AF confirmation - Works fine on older bodies but gives me an Error 01 on the 5D iii. Using a non AF confirmation adapter (without the contacts) works fine so there is obviously something different in the way the 5D iii communicates with the lens. I'm hoping that a firmware update will fix whatever the problem is

I had the same problem with my 24-70. I had to send it in to CPS 3 times before it finally got fixed. They replaced everything from the AF, Collar, and Diaphragm Assy. After the CPS discount, it cost $168. Since the problem was not fixed after the first time, they paid for shipping both ways the 2nd and 3rd time.

I would recommend that when you send it in, be sure to write a detailed explanation as to the problems and how you troubleshooted it so that way they can really fix the problem.

Since I had to send it in 3 times, I was without that lens for about 3 weeks.

I just wrote in another about it since I had it twice on my 100 non-L macro, err01 says your lens doesn't do what the body wants it to, so either the contacts aren't clean or the lens is broken, most likely due to dust/corrosion which makes the aperture fail.

Basically expect to wave your lens good-bye since the non-cps professional repair will be as expensive as getting a new one with warranty...but you can still use it in reverse position as a macro :-p ... http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=6521.msg122285#msg122285
