you typically download a file from Canon and put it on a properly formatted memory card, load it into the camera and install from there.. I believe. It's been a while since I've done it, but there are instructions with the download. It's not difficult.

Not hard at all...

1.) Format CF Card
2.) Place firmware file into first file opened on CF card (.fir file)
3.) Put camera into any creative mode, such as Av
4.) Go to firmware and click on it in-camera
5.) Follow steps to update
6.) Once complete hit "OK" and remove battery from camera for a few seconds
7.) Re-format CF card and you are all set.

Most updates are downloaded as zip files, and you MUST expand the zip file on your computer and then put the full file onto the card and not the zipped file.

I've known people that get so frustrated that the update won't download onto the camera, and when I look at the card, they have just copied the zip file onto it, instead of expanding it first.
