Any focusing screen that will give me a brighter, yet still same functionality, with 1,2 and 1,4 primes? I read once that the VF stays at 2,8 brightness no matter what lens you use.

That's what the Eg-S screen is for. You're correct - the stock focusing screen not only gives f/2.8 brightness with faster lenses, more importantly it shows f/2.8 DoF with faster lenses, which is a problem for manually focusing, since the real DoF is thinner than what you see. The Eg-S shows the true DoF (and brightness) of fast lenses, the tradeoff is that slow lenses look darker in the VF.

Neuro! since you seem to have unlimited knowledge and tests at your disposal (I mean this in a positive manner:), I wondered if you have seen the EG-S on the 24-105mm F4.0L, MP-E65 F2.8 (which gets darker as you zoom in), and the 17mm TS F4.0L? Is it getting darker, but still manageable, or will it spoil the game?

I don't think you want a prism focusing screen if you are using T&S! The focusing plane won't be parallel to the sensor, and you want to focus over different parts. That's what LiveView is for! I did get a Eg-S and it worked very well with the TS-24mkI. Since at night I mainly use the 50f/1.4, it's not that dark, and I can focus reasonably well at 4.0.

It's ok with the 24-105mm f/4L IS, I notice it's dimmer indoors but manageable. As baldusi states, I wouldn't bother with the Eg-S for a TS-E lens or the MP-E 65mm - in both cases, Live View is much better. In particular, with a TS-E lens the movements interfere with metering, and Live View gets around that problem, too. Because Live View is so convenient, I've not even tried the Eg-S for either the MP-E 65mm or the TS-E 24mm II (and I've never used a TS-E 17mm).

Awesome! I hardly ever use the 70-200 other than outside, and maybe then it's not a huge problem?

Is there an f-stop my 70-200 f2,8 II will look like in the VF, I mean, can I stop down to f4 and use the dof-peview button to simulate what it will look like wide open with the Eg-S screen mounted? I really would like to not have to change focusing screens off and on.

My absolutely most used lens are the 24 II, 50 L and 85 II. I also use the TS-17, but almost always with LV, so then it won't matter.

Your 70-200/2.8 will look basically no different than it does now - the stock VF brightness maxes out at ~f/2.8 (maybe f/2.5). So, it's only with f/4 and slower lenses that the VF looks darker with the Eg-S screen. If you have only f/2.8 and faster lenses (except for the TS-E which is better with Live View anyway), just switch to the Eg-S and you won't need to go back to the stock Eg-A.

Thanks a bunch!!

I just bought and mounted the Eg-S today and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Can't believe I haven't done it before.

Will the Eg-S work for the 1d X also? The camera suddenly became way cooler to use!

No, because the 1-series VF is bigger, so a bigger focusing screen is needed. The Ec-S is the version sized for the 1-series, and will work on the 1D X (AFAIK).

Ah, yes that makes sense *remembering being blown away by the size of the 1d X"window"*

Good thing they're not hugely expensive stuff, for once!

The f4 TS is quite dark, and the 70-200 also seems a bit darker at 2,8, but it doesn't seem to affect how fast and accurate it locks focus anyways (?)

cool,

I've found this screen absolutely necessary for using the lensbaby sweet 35
12 circular blade aperture f2.5 to f22 MF only its a really nice lens for interesting shots
, strangley the metering is correct even though there is no AF confirm chip on the lensbaby

Well, I picked up Ec-B and Ec-L screens through focusingscreen.com.

They do not line up *exactly* out of the box, and I suppose that is to be expected.

Self-adhesive shims are supplied, along with directions for installation. The directions have pictures explaining where to put the shims. I was able to move the screen about in the holder and get it "close enough".

So far, I prefer the Ec-L with the split cross in the middle instead of the single horizontal line (Ec-B). The microprism version was not in stock when I ordered.

Both have the grid lines, which will be useful.

The viewfinder does appear to be a bit darker than the stock screen or Ec-S.

Compared to the other suppliers of similar items, the price was reasonable and I received it within a week from Taiwan.
