Cool article. Thanks for sharing. I also liked the interactive components of the article.

It figures that the camera was funded by DARPA.

While watching the video of the interview with one of the inventors, I was thinking, "this will really take the creativity and "art" out of photography for many people," and right about then, the inventor made the same observation. Not sure I like that idea...

There's still a whole lot that goes into making a quality image than simply having a big picture that you can crop out interesting parts. Everything from depth of field to the angle of the shot to the lighting to field compression/expansion all play an important role--and cropping isn't going to help.

This thing really doesn't have any new sensor technology. It's basically 100 camera shots stitched together. If you try and decrease the size of the unit, you decrease the sensor size resulting in crappy quality. I'm sure they do something similar to this with satellites. Either that or just one huge sensor but the fact remains there's no new technology here to aid in improved light gathering which is the real obstacle to super high resolution cameras.
