going on vacation...need help...

Hi everyone,

I'm going to Italy in a couple of weeks for vacation. I'm very excited for this trip! I look forward to capturing some awesome pictures. I've upgrade my body recently from a rebel to a 5D Mark II w/the kit lens (24-105). I need your help on two things:

1) I'm looking for a battery grip...please recommend a quality, compatible battery grip for the 5D Mark II...

2) What's a good cleaning product/solution for the lens?

Where are you going?

I just used a lens cloth to clean the lens. And I used a spare battery instead of a battery grip. I am still considering the WFT-4 if they get the Mac software worked out to get GPS with the 5Dm2.

get a good UV filter for your lens and you don't have to worry too much about keeping it clean. Just wipe it with whatever. ( I know, your still SUPPOSED to use a lens cloth, but eh, I've had good results with my shirt).

As for grip, i bought a cheap off brand one, cant remember what brand, but i think it was under $100 and it works like a dream.

Italy is full of ancient buildings mostly built close with narrow streets
So if you visit cities like Rome, Florence, venice, Sienna, Luca etc then you may consider taking the 16-35mm (rent it) since the 24mm may not be wide enough.

A lenspen and a blower would usually be sufficient, but if you have a UV filter attach it could be faster, as you wouldn't be worrying about scratching the front element quite as much...

Bringing the 24-105mm is an excellent choice. If you are into good food, you will be quick to find non-tourist restaurants, which offer food of excellent quality. Attached is a shot I have taken with my 24-105.

By the way for taking photos of those narrow Italian streets you should bring something significantly wider than 24mm. I suggest either going all out for the 14mm or one of the wide angle zooms 17-40 or 16-35. Any prime in the area around 20mm focal length should also provide nice results. My point here is that 24mm will be a real limitation on the wide end. On a full frame you should be bringing something in the 18mm or 20mm range.

Regarding cleaning tools I have always brought a cleaning cloth on my trips to Italy, but I have rarely needed it. Attaching a battery grip is in my opinion a very good idea, because you may frequently want to frame shots in portrait mode, even for architecture. Another good gadget to bring would be a Gorilla Pod and a wired or remote trigger. You may find this very helpful for night-time long exposure shots, where you may want to be close to the ground for a different look.

comes with a built-in intervalometer as well, which can be a bit hard to use until you get to grips with the logic of it.

Apart from a soft cloth, i really like to have these small pump to shoot air on the lens and remove dust without touching it even with the cloth...not sure how you called them exactly but you probably know what i mean anyway...
