Happy Hallowe’en! Canon to announce 3 lenses on October 31, 2024

Well, one can hope.... "Hope is a dangerous thing".

.... and no, they don't need cheaper lenses considering they have no problem selling the ones they currently make.

Economies of scale come into play with VCM and the iris thing.
Lol… I still like to hope!

I do think they need one cheap VCM so that new buyers go..
“you know what, that 50 1.4 is close to the price of the 24mm 1.8 and 85mm 2.0.. I’ll give it a shot”

… and then as we know, they’ll eventually have all the VCMs.

I’m loving the size and weight of the 35mm 1.4 and will be buying the 50mm 1.4 even though I own the 1.2
I just never bring that 50mm 1.2 or 85mm 1.2 anywhere except planned shoots. These 1.4’s are perfect and destroy the 1.8s
I may even sell the 1.2

I have held out on the 50 1.2 for the 1.4, I'm glad it has finally arrived. I'm happy to only ever own one brick of a non-supertelephoto lens.

Looking forward to the 50 f/1.4, I’d really like something better than the 50STM, but smaller/lighter/cheaper than the f/1.2.
In my tests the 50/1.8 is really very good. I'm very curious to see if anyone ever comes out with back-to-back photos showing the new 1.4 really out-performs the 1.8, even when taking advantage of its extra 2/3 stop.

The answer is yes, and noticeably so.

Just play with this (1.8 v 1.2)

Yes, the 1.2L is brilliant, but the 1.4 will be playing closer to the 1.2 than the 1.8.

I want them all! If the new 50mm f1.4 is the same size and weight of the recently released 35mm - i adore this lens! - “downgrading” from my 50mm f1.2 to the new VCM version is something to consider. The 24mm f1.4 is very tempting as well. The 70-200mm with the TC could be a good compromise, retaining the flexibility of its focal length, but 2x it when necessary at a decent aperture w/o carrying around another heavy lens (either the 100-300mm or the hypothetical 200-500mm).

Canon seems on fire on the lens front, not so much on bodies!

It’s not so much about sharpness, but more about less busy bokeh and hopefully less CA.

Also, even after fixing the twisting bug, the IBIS in the R5(II) seems to add blur, the same lens on the R8 takes much less blurry photos in the same situation (1/200s, ES). I need to do some more tests and likely bribe my kids to sit still long enough for that :)

I'm pretty interested in the 24mm version. But I'm also impressed that they managed to do it all in the same sizes at least when the teaser is showing it correct. If you go for all of them a sticker on the lens cap is more then needed by fishing them out of the backpack :p

At wider apertures, the difference is huge.
But not so at smaller ones, so it depends on the use. I did favor the lighter f/1,8 for hikes, needing a lens occasionally, and mostly for landscapes at f/5.6 or f/8.
If I shot most pictures wide open, the only usable lens would, of course, be the f/1,2 or maybe the coming f/1,4.

if these two VC lenses are as sharp as the 35mm then they will both be very sweet. This will be a first for Canon...a sharp and contrasty 50mm f1.4! I can't wait to see the MFT charts.
Both of these lenses are easy targets for success, effectively low hanging fruit in the Canon lens portfolio, especially the 24mm f1.4, the current EF version (mkII) is a pretty old design and is quite weal optically compared to the EF 35mm f1.4 II L. The EF 24mm f1.4 mkII certainly isn't able to keep up with the R6ii's resolution, let alone the R5 when shooting wide open.
By the looks of these images, this new RF 24mm f1.4 L VC will be smaller and lighter than the current EF 24mm f1.4 II L. A mirrorless 50mm lens will generally be longer in physical size due to the mount distance being further back. effectively, it needs to be a the same size as the same optical design would be on a DSLR but with an integrated adapter making up the extra length. This is why all of the lenses over 50mm on the R mount are at least 25mm longer then they were on the EF mount.
Where as the 24mm should in theory be shorter because any focal length less than 35mm on a DSLR needs to be a retrofocus design to cater for the distance between the mount and sensor. Mirrorless lenses don't have a mirror box to cater for and a 24mm lens should be able to employ a superior optical formula as a concequence.

I'm excited to see and try these two lenses. I tend to favour a 35/85 fast prime combo but I know that a lot of photographers like the 24/50/135 combo.

Not me. I will never ever never get rid of my 50 1.2.
