Help on Markins Plate for rental Canon 300 2.8 II

I'm renting a 300 2.8 II for a couple of days and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether I can fit my markins plate PL-55 on it? it is the plate I have for the 70-200 2.8 II

I have never used the 300 II so do not know if the lens curved foot would accept this plate given the plate it has a stop on one side. I would think of aligning the plate's stop to the forward side of the foot but will the screw position have enough play to fit it?

Though i'll be using the 300 mostly handheld I would really like to be able to use it as well on my tripod and I don't want to buy another plate just for a rental lens.

The 300/2.8L IS II's tripod foot is ~73mm long, and your Markins plate is 60mm long. There's enough flexibility in positioning of the plate screw that your plate will be able to mount on the lens. I can't speak to balance - the shorter plate might not give you the latitude to properly balance the camera+lens on your tripod head.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I was not able to find the 300's foot specs!

I think it could do ok for just a couple of days of limited tripod use.

I don't think it's specified anywhere - I just did a quick estimate based on the TDP review of the lens where it's pictured with a Wimberley P-30 plate on the foot (and the length of the plate is specified by Wimberley).

I agree - it should be fine for limited use, and the lens isn't that heavy (for a supertele, that is).
