Help with back/front focus errors

Have been using various "old" manual focus 50-55 f/1.2 lenses wide-open on my 5D2 with the appropriate adapter. I carefully focus through the viewfinder only to find that my (very near) subject is out of focus. When I use live view in the same situation, I find that the focus is dead-on. Is this typical? If not, is there a solution? (BTW, when I use my 50/1.4 or 85/1.8 wide-open using the camera's AF, the focus is dead-on.)

Try using the diopter adjustment, it could be off.
