Here I go, the Full Frame way!!

After weeks of debates, I finally bought my first Full Frame Camera. The 5D Mark III. I got it today!!Hurrrraayyyy!! Thanks everyone who patiently responded to me, when I asked several questions like FF or Crop, 5DIII or 6D etc etc and multiple times too :) . It was hard to shed $1000 extra on 5D compared to 6D, but since this might be my camera for a long time to come and since I really liked the Speed, AF (I tried the 5D through CPS loan) and ergonomics and ofcourse 50% more shutter life, I went for it and I dont regret :D .
I got the Kit Lens 24-105L as well. I am keeping my 40D as a backup and also for Telephoto reach due to the crop factor. I am also keeping the 17-40L and 100mm Macro Non-L. Sold my 28-135. I am debating whether to keep my 70-300mm Non L lens or upgrade it to the L version. I tried the 100-400mm, liked the lens and the IQ, but its a bit heavy and is making me visible to the crowd ;D . So at the very best I am thinking to stretch the budget and get a 70-300mm L and sell my Non L lens.
Please share your thoughts on my lens kit and whether the Non-L 70-300mm be good enough on the 5D or whether the camera will show the flaws of the lens. Also is there any other "must have" lens out there which I should go for instead of the 70-300mm L.
Once again thanks for helping me make the decision on 5D.

70-300L is a very nice lens, and is ideal if you use it for general shooting outside in good light. It is also significantly lighter than the 70-200L II and 100-400L. It's still white, so it still attracts attention but it's smaller size allows it to be carried in a small camera bag.

Congratulations !
I did the same thing last week and am sure you'll be very pleased . The kit lens is very nice and has turned into my walk around lens . Used the 17-40 on a 7D , it's to wide for general use on a FF but it's nice to suddenly have a superwide zoom on the 5D.

The idea you have of upgrading to a L type telephoto lens is a good one, might as well take advantage of the higher resolution censor with better glass . You will without a doubt see the difference !

I dont know what kind of photography you do,

but it seems you're missing an all around general lens - 24-70L II f2.8 (highly recommend)
and fisheye 8-15L f4, not recommended for everyone, but it's one coolest lens in my kit

I have just bought the 70-300L to replace my 70-300 non-L. I can't emphasise enough how much I think it is worth upgrading to the L version (except to say I just registered so I can post this!)
The L version is much sharper at 300mm, the CA is better, contrast and clarity is much improved, IS I'd say is marginally worse but nothing you'll miss, it's manufactured with much tighter tolerances so everything fits/moves better (my non-L feels wobbly, especially the barrel). Most significantly at 300/5.6 I took two photos of the same target, at the same distance, under the same lighting, with the same settings (1/40) using both the L and the non-L version. I found that not only was the L lens yielding a much sharper image but that it produced a much brighter image too. In fact, to get an image of equal brightness I was able to shoot with the L at 1/60 instead of 1/40. So, although it's not a proper test, I'd say it's a brighter lens too.

I like to photograph birds with my 7D so having a lens this much sharper @ 300mm is great. I tried a friends 100-400 and although it's a good lens, I found it slightly too cumbersome to carry round. The 70-300 L is heavier than the non-L but it's only 400g or so. Unlike the 100-400, it doesn't feel too heavy to have hanging off the camera mount or to have hanging off my Blackrapid strap. I find it quite portable. If all you're used to is the plastic entry level cameras/lenses it will be quite different but you'll get used to it.

In short, get it!!!! You definitely won't regret it!

The OP said he bought the 5d3 with the kit 24-105.

24-105 = general lens = check

The fisheye is definitely a specialty lens though.

+1, although the fisheye can be used as a UWA in a pinch. It can be defished in LR using the Canon 15mm fisheye profile. It actually produced better results than I would have thought: corners are softer than a UWA as one would expect but AOV is impressive.

I bought the 70-300L a while back and after using it alongside my 100-400L, finally sold the longer zoom and replaced it with a 400mm f5.6 prime for those "longer shots". The 70-300L is considerably sharper than the 100-400 zoom in my opinion. So much easier to carry around. I also have a 70-200 f4 and it almost makes that redundant too! I can definately say that if you get one, you won't regret it.

I headed into town today with the intention of getting a 6D, great price, amazing camera, but It didn't happen.
My two favourite types of photography are telephoto and macro, both of which are best on crop.
Doing telephoto with a crop sensor pretty much can't be beat. Full frame needs more pixels to compete (or $10,000 worth of glass).

Nice!

I sold the 60D I had in hopes of getting a decent amount for it before the 70D came out. I love the additional reach of crop but the mediocre high ISO performance (above 1600) was really becoming a drag. That's when I decided to spring for the FF 5D. I haven't gotten to use it too much (winter, etc.) but when I did, the IQ was amazing. The last straw with the 60D was shooting an outdoor nighttime sporting event - I had the 5D at the time but elected to take the 60D for the extra reach (I knew it would come in handy). I put the 70-200 2.8 lens on it and the show lighting was absolutely atrocious. This resulted in vastly underexposed/ISO 3200 shots at the shutter speeds I needed to freeze the action, and the resulting noise stripped so much detail out of the photos that I think I may as well have taken the 5DIII and cropped after the fact...and my hit rate probably would have been higher too. (this is noise that's visible even in 640x480 crops!)

Anyway, I still want a decent APS-C camera to supplement the 5D. I'm hoping for a beefed up 70D (7DII probably will cost too much/have to wait too long) that will have better AF tracking for sports. Still cheaper - and lighter! - than one of those massive 400mm or 500mm behemoths...
