Is it possible to correct a coating on a lens?

I have searched online if this can be done but I'm getting contradictory info.

I just purchased a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II and next day as I placed the lens in my camera bag the lens cover was pushed against the edge too hard and popped off then tapped the lens. It made a very faint "smudge" or indent in the coating the size of a pen-dot. I don't believe the glass is scratched...

But can this be corrected or do I just have to live with it? It doesn't show up in pictures at all...

Just bothers me as I just purchased this this week and to my luck this happens.

Short of changing the front element altogether I think you have to live with it.

I don't believe that this minor defect will ever affect your images. You will have to live with it. I feel your pain.

They can't be 're-coated' or at least not cost effectively as it would require sending the lens to Japan. Service would just replace the front element.

Personally, I generally put a UV/clear filter (B+W MRC or Nano) as soon as I take a lens out of the box. If a good filter is damaged, replacing it is cheaper than replacing a front element (especially when you add in shipping/insurance), and it's also faster and a lot more convenient.

I'd agree with all of the responses. You certainly shouldn't notice it under normal circumstances. You could take a few images with the sun or harsh lights in the frame to see if you get any unusual flare effects just to ease your mind.

If it bothers you, you can replace the front element. Its usually not a high priced fix (depending on your point of view).

I'd check to see if flare has become a issue, if not, don't bother.
