Just picked up a 6D... I am really impressed so far.

I currently use a 7D1 as my main camera body. I shoot mainly wildlife and so far the 7D has done everything and more that I have wanted it too. However, I know that there are advantages of having a nice FF so after doing my homework and talking to several camera buddies I bought a 6D.

I have owned the 5D2 and have tried out the 5D3. I already have a camera that works perfect for wildlife so I cannot justify spending 3 grand on a FF body, nor will I ever. The 5D2 is an amazing camera and nice bodies can be found used for around $1300-$1400. The recent rebate on the 6D makes that camera body look at lot more attractive, so I went ahead and bought one.

It is a little smaller than my 7D and is a lot lighter but it does not feel like a "cheap" camera in any way. I was a little nervous about the AF system but after trying it out, it seems to work perfectly. AF is very fast and accurate and works fantastic in low light, much faster than my 7D. I use the center point 99% of the time anyway, so lack of focus points does not really matter to me...

The only other thing that bothered me was the 1/4000s max shutter speed. But when I really thought about it, I rarely ever need that fast of a shutter speed anyway!

This isn't a discussion about the 6D being better than any other camera, Canon or otherwise. If you bought a 5D3 and it's amazing then good for you. I didn't want a FF for sports or wildlife, I already have a great camera for that. I wanted a FF for portraits and low light photography like lightening and night shots and also to have a true wild angle camera. Again I can't (and don't have) justify spending 3 grand on a camera body.

The buttons feel good and the lack of joystick is not really a problem. It's a little different than the "normal" EOS layout but feels natural if you are used to Canon bodies.

If you have ever wanted a FF and have been nervous about buying this camera because some people have called it "cheap" or are trying to pressure you into a camera you don't need then ignore them. You won't be unhappy with the 6D. The images are AMAZING!!!

Just my 2 cents.

I bought a 5D MK III before the 6D arrived. Otherwise, I'd be quite happy with one, since low light photography is my thing. My 7D was fine at low ISO's, which meant that high shutter speeds with f/5.6 telephotos was a problem due to a lot of noise.

I think the camera will work out well for you.

Oh believe me I have wanted a 5D3 for a long time, it's just the price tag kept me away. I think you are right, the 6D will do perfect for the kind of FF shooting I will be doing.

Whenever I see this, sigh and click away.

"I use my hand anyway so who needs a wife!"

You don't know what you miss till you try it out.

I'm the same as him. I have used tracking and alternate focus points on my 5D MK III extensively, wanting it to help, but found its not needed for my work, just like I don't need 10 fps to get a good shot. I have no issue with those who enjoy using those features, but they do not benefit everyone. I probably find 1 in 100 shots where a off center point would help, but I use a long focal length, and can recompose with no issue on focus accuracy for those few shots.

I occasionally use the off-center points. When I need it though, it is great to have them.
Plus, the AI Servo performance of the 5D III is just mind-blowing (disclaimer: I have never used a 1-series body) and you do need the off center points there. Here again, the 7D wouldn't track as well (or I wasn't skilled enough for it).

Most "issues" with the 6d come down to simple user error, if anyone complains about the 6d it's most likely their own lack of skill. Even with the outer points, you can get tack sharp images (if your lenses are properly afma'ed, that is) and I've succeed to track with it just like a 1dx would.

I agree Richard. We have followed the same path. I'm keeping my 7D for sports and wildlife, and my recent 6D purchase seems to have been the perfect choice for a second body. I'd like to have the 5Diii but can't justify the additional expense without actually making money. I decided at the last minute, holiday deals were too good to pass up.

At first the build quality difference seemed significant. I didn't realize how beefy the 7D was before I started to handle the 6D (disclaimer: my last real camera was 30 years ago, a Nikon F3), and it did feel a bit plasticky, but this was only in rotation of the main dial. It's all good now.

I don't miss the joystick at all, I've adapted well to the user interface on the 6D. Sure it would have been nice to be more consistent with the 7D but everything is as accessible and fast without it.

I've used alternate AF points and had no problem with still subjects, but I've always been stuck in the focus and recompose methodology so don't really have a need for others. Nice to have and happy they aren't as bad as some say. I haven't had an opportunity to test tracking, but if I ever have the need I'll probably use the 7D anyway.

The one disappointment with the move to FF is that in my opinion the 24-105mm kit lens is a bit of a let down. I find the 15-85mm I use with the 7D to be a much more reliable lens for sharp images. I've tested three so far with the same results. This lens is an L only in build quality. I have a few primes in this range and the 16-35mm f/4 so I have a workaround, and will still use the 24-105mm for general walk-around purposes but will continue to have low expectations.

Congrats on the new purchase and Happy Holidays to you.
