I just ran across this from here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-iv.htm

"There is no Canon 5D Mark IV, and probably never will be.

Canon usually lays off the "Mark" sequence after about Mark III for anything, and with the introduction of the 5DS in January 2015, there will probably never be a 5D Mark IV..."

Didn't he previously have a date on his site for when the 5D Mark IV would come out, which ended up being incorrect (it was close to the 5DS release date though)?

He goes on to say that if one ever existed, it would likely borrow features from the 7DII and 5DS (namely anti-flicker) and "should" have more FPS than the 5DS - around 10 fps - and remain around 22 MP.

Then he brands this yet to exist camera a consumer camera (I thought the 5D line was considered "Prosumer"?) and, based on his previously mentioned fast fps thoughts says, "The world of actual shooting (as opposed to desk jockeys reading about cameras on the internet) doesn't really need a fast consumer full frame camera."

If I understand his logic correctly, it's:
1. I think if they made a 5D4 it should have this.
2. I don't think shooters need that set of features.

and then instead of concluding that his prediction may be faulty...

3. There will never be a 5D4.

?? What?

Towards the bottom of the page he calls the 5DS the 5DIII's replacement and adds "and we're done." "Any idiot can count to four, but in this case, there won't be a 5D Mark IV because it's called the 5DS."

?HUh?

Hi Mitch!

Honestly I didn't take the time to read through Mr. KR written down thoughts, beacause I believe he should think more often before writing it down. But that just IMHO.

Here are my thoughts - hopefully more carefully considered:
Canon usually lays off the "Mark" sequence after about Mark III
Okay, so no 1D MkIV did exist. Interesting. But he said "usually", so lucky him.

He goes on to say that if one ever existed, it would likely borrow features from the 7DII and 5DS (namely anti-flicker) and "should" have more FPS than the 5DS - around 10 fps - and remain around 22 MP.
Nothing new as all the rumors in the www already stated similar specs.

Yo. He'd better think first here.

The 5D III was and is an allrounder "Profi" and "Prosumer" workhorse all over the place and a cash cow for Canon.
The 5DS is a specialist, a real specialist.

So IMHO there will be a "Profi"/"Prosumer" successor. Maybe it won't be called 5DIV but 5DX as for a line split. And this is something I feel quite sure off so his prediction about the IV might be true. But not about the 5DS beeing the "real" successor of the 5DIII

Towards the bottom of the page he calls the 5DS the 5DIII's replacement and adds "and we're done." "Any idiot can count to four, but in this case, there won't be a 5D Mark IV because it's called the 5DS."
Yeah. And every idiot that is not an analphabet can write down his idiotic thoughts in the www. ::) ::) ::)
Disclaimer: This does not mean that I called anybody an idiot.

Well, as my 5D3 was stolen last month, I am certainly in for a replacement. I often take pictures indoors, mostly in Indonesia where lighting is usually very limited because of cost. So I am forced to use high ISO settings and even 32000 is sometimes not enough. Therefor an upper limit of over 100.000 would be most welcome especially of course if the noise in not at ISO 64000 higher than say, the noise at ISO 4000 of the 5D3.
And I dont care a damn whether the thing will be called a 5D4 or a 3D or an 8D or whatever.
Now it has started to rain cats and dogs and I will close down the computers. Good bye for now.

I disagree, I believe he thinks very carefully before writing things down, the better to induce others to repost his drivel across the Internet, for the reasons martti expressed.

Why people are so worried on what KR says? So much that it even deserves to have a dedicated thread:-)
I do not know, but for me he is the Chuck Norris of photography....
Love it. That's hilarious!
Now we really need a Chuck Norris thread.

Let's not forget that Sir Edmund Hilary forgot his camera, but luckily found Chuck Norris' at the summit of Everest.

Yep. Whatever. Just never forget that Ken's product is himself. That's all he's selling. While we all have opinions, some of which are shared by others and some not, you need to remember that his "website" is simply a blog of his opinions. Other than the times when he lists the specs of a new camera, there is little there that is fact. Unfortunately many people seem to view his blog as a fact filled website. Ok, whatever. I see far more interesting opinions and conversations here than on his blog myself. It sure must have garnered a lot of hits to his blog though, so for him, mission accomplished.

Maybe I am too old or old fashined for this kind of new business (as martti expressed).
But seemed to be a good decission, not to look at his hp today.
And even better to quit this thread.

Thank you for helping me to find this answer.

Canon would be stupid not to make a IV...

If we need specialism (real word?), we turn to our Phase One backs that have better colour rendering and detail.

And I wouldn't consider the 5Ds for video at all...

So what the heck :S

I think Ken Rockwell is wrong on that speculation. He is speculating, not making a claim.

If the 5DS had better ISO performance and video features, then yes it could be speculated that Canon has no intention to create a 5D4. It would have had to have at least equal ISO to the 5D3, and 1080 at 60FPS at a minimum.

However, as others have pointed out, the 5DS is way too specialist to stand alone. There would be a gaping void left behind for an EVENT camera.

Still, that doesn't mean the 5D4 will exist. It could be the 6D2 moves upmarket enough to cover that. Unlikely as that would mean the 5D series has been reassigned as a studio only, high MP DSLR. Then the 6D line is now the mainstream do-everything event camera. This would abandon the entry level FF market. And no...the 7D2 doesn't cover it.

I think a 5Dsomething has to come out, with somewhere between 24-30MP, more FPS, 4K, better ISO and DR. Otherwise, there's just a big gap left.

If KR turns out to be right, that would be a major let down by Canon. There will be a mid-level exodus to Nikon. D750 and D810 and future revisions of those will dominate the next 3-4 years easily.

Ken's original prediction was a 5D4 at 36MP. He took that down after the 5DS came out. I have it saved somewhere I think. I like to save predictions and rumors and then I go back to see who was most accurate.
