My new DSLR

im a new member to this site but I just purchased a canon 60D. It's a huge upgrade from my canon FS200 camcorder and Nikon n2020 SLR . I got the 60D with a 18-135mm lens I plan on using the camer a for a photography class and to make short films.

I have been researching this camera for months and feel that I have made the right choice
Other lens I have been looking at are 17-40mm , and 24-105mm

congratulations i bought the exact same kit on november 2010 now I'm hooked and about £4000 later as i wanted better glass i got a 70-200 f2.8 L is usm mk2 and a 24-70 f2.8 L usm both great lenses and i bout a 430 ex11 and various other accessories be prepared to spend a fortune lol i thought thats all id want but you just want more haha now I'm waiting on a 5d mk3 you only live once capture those memories

The 24-105 is awfully nice, but so is the 15-85mm -- I'd recommend you do some shooting first on your kit lens, figure out what you find the majority of your shots are taken at (focal length) then get a lens that does that really well (I find myself gravitating to 50-60mm on the 60D but that's just me.

I have the 17-40mm for over 6 years with 20D and then 40D, before the 17-55mm f2.8 is available. I am very happy with it. It is my MAIN lens. I am not a big fan of long lens. My other lens is 28-135mm USM IS. I also have a 18-55mm IS kit lens if I need to "travel light".However most of the post here like the 17-55mm f2.8 better than the 17-40mm.

Congratulations! And I have to agree with bornshooter. It's very addicting and the $ run up fast. I started two years ago with a 50d and within a year moved up to a 7d. I gave the 50d to my son and bought a 5dMii. I use the 7d and 5dMii with a 50mm 1.2L, a 24-70mm 2.8L,

....

I agree with Rocky. I just got the 17-40mm L (my first L lens) and a 7D and it's incredible. But I shot for years with my Digital Rebel XT and it's been very good to me. Regardless, bornshooter and steven63 are right -- get out and shoot with what you've got until you hit its limits, then make a move toward the next lens or accessory.

There seems to be a general attitude out there that the 18-135mm lens is a poor performer simply because it's a kit lens. Folks, the 24-105mm is a kit lens. If you depend on hard scientific analysis, look at the SLR Gear lens review of the 18-135mm. It has very strong image quality. If you depend on subjective opinion, I slapped one on an APS-C body recently for a compact set-up on a vacation and was extremely happy with the results. The lens is sharp and the colors are great. Oh, no, it doesn't have USM. Meh, cry about it. If you're livelihood isn't dependent on your images and you don't need weather sealing or f/2.8, stick with the 18-135mm. It's a great lens. ZachyP, somewhere down the road I'd be looking to get a couple fast primes or the 10-22mm to complement what you have. The 10-22mm has equally exceptional image quality (considered a "pro" lens by Canon CPS), and many non-L primes offer equal or superior image quality to L zooms, while achieving wider apertures.
