Need advice using the 1100 and changing the apperture

First post here!

I have a Canon 1100D body. I purchased a 50mm F1.8 lens

I put into Apperture Priority mode
I can't change the apperture settings by looking into the viewfinder - the options just isn't there

When I turn the wheel to change, it doesn't do anything
The only way I can change is to change to Liveview screen and then press the shutter half way down
ONLY then can I change the apperture

What am I doing wrong?

I do not have the 1100 but your problem seems very unique.
Something I think you are doing wrong and when you figure out what it is perhaps you will bang your fist on your forehead and say 'dang'!
