The patent app, contains four embodiments of a 21.64mm image height lens design entailing 3 lens groups (12 elements) and inner focusing. The lens configuration chosen aims to minimize Spherical & Comatic aberrations and field curvature, despite the use of the inner focusing technique. The four numerical examples have these main attributes:
1) Fl = 49.53mm, Fn = 1.45, Total length = 99.46mm
2) Fl = 35.88mm, Fn = 1.45, Total length = 126.92mm
3) Fl = 55.42mm, Fn = 1.45, Total length = 100.44mm
4) Fl = 50.75mm, Fn = 1.45, Total length = 98.17mm
The patent application claims benefit in JP2012-279048 filed 2012 Dec 21.

I suppose a patent is only one step on a long road, but it looks like Sigma made them a stand up and take notice!

How do you figure that? The patent was published in Japan in 2012, which means it was submitted in 2010 or 2011. The US patent came 2 years after the Japanese one.

As mentioned JP2012-279048 was filed on 2012 Dec 21, meaning that this is the priority date.
In order for US20140176782A1 to claim benefit of the Japanese Patent, it must be filed no later than
12 month after the Japanese, and indeed US20140176782A1 was filed on Dec 18 2013.
Most often Japanese "kokai" patent apps are published 18month after their priority date, which is also the reason that the US version is published now. The Japanese version of JP2012-279048 has not been published on the JPO web site as of writing, but this in similar cases often happens a week or two after the US version is published..

Keep in mind though that, that many patents never "materialize"
