No 24-70 F2.8 on sale in New Zealand

I cannot seem to find any stores with the 24-70 in stock. Two authorised dealers don't even have the lens listed, another has the lens listed as awaiting new model. I can't even find second hand models for sale, this is crazy.

One of them has the 24-70 F2.8 II listed at NZD$3599 which is approx USD$2850 at the moment! That price is pretty crazy though, its more than the 70-200 F2.8 II by $100 NZD.

Do other countries have similar issues at the moment? Does this mean we can expect the new lens to start shipping?

Let's hope so. ;)

Has anyone tried the 24-70 f2.8 Tamron? I have a Canon 34-70 that I'm not happy with, Canon Australia seem incapable of fixing it, and the MKII is overdue and over-priced.

With the Tamron at $AU1299 and getting reasonably good reviews, giving it serious thought. Shooting basketball in less-than-ideal conditions.

Canon really cocked up on this one. My friend sold his 24-70 I in hope of getting the II soon, but the price set him off. Now he's buying primes (that's worse, for him, financially)

How did Canon force him to sell his lens?

I'm baffled that anyone would make a decision like that before getting the facts, especially in light of the 70-200 IS II story.
