No one ever talks about the 28-300 L

Just bought it used on the bay.
Now I feel a Little stupid because I mainly use my 60D and the M and my Tamron 18-270 PCD VCD is not so much worse in IQ while in regards to weight, cost, comfort etc...

but the predecessor of the 28-300L the good old non stabilized 35-350 L was my first White lens. After all my plastic noble trash that 35-350 L was the coolest thing I ever had on my analog EOS 10 (and the best Thing I ever bought from tax return)

So with IS and a slightly changed range the 28-300 is just like a time travel 20 years back into my youth

If you asked me a few months ago, I probably would have never considered this lens, due to the combination of reason's already listed (size, weight, push-pull, price, etc.). It's biggest pro, is versatility.

However...

This summer I did have the opportunity to test one out on my 5D III, for about a half hour. I did like the lens, much more than I would have expected. Although, the image quality may suffer a bit, compared to some of Canon's other offerings, it was still quite good. If I could pick up one of these for under $1800, possibly refurbished, and the stars aligned, I might consider one.

Of course, I'm not sure what I would use it for. It's not fast enough for most of the action I shoot and it's too big for a walk around lens. I also have much better lenses for portraits and landscapes, so I guess it could keep my 100-400mm company, in the bag, since it also rarely gets used.

I've had the 28-300L for a while, and I used it frequently as a travel lens - it was more convenient than the 24-105L + 70-200/2.8L IS II (since the 28-300L is equivalent to the latter in size/weight), and delivered IQ equivalent to the 24-105L across it's broader range.

However, after getting the 24-70/2.8L II (and selling the 24-105L), I also picked up the 70-300L as a travel telezoom. I find the combo of 24-70 II + 70-300L delivers better IQ across an even broader range, takes up the same room and similar weight in the bag, and I don't mind the lens changes. I'll likely sell the 28-300L in the near future (I bought it used on CL at a good enough price that I'll likely make money, or at least break even, on the sale - a long term free 'rental' like that is my favorite way to evaluate a lens.
