One friend want to Buy my 24-70L... but...

Hi Everyone!

Background: I have 17-40L, 24-70L, 135L and 70-300L, yesterday pulled the trigger with the 35L... so its on the way...

BUT... yesterday a friend of mine wants to buy me my 24-70L... I am tempted, it will be another step into the "all prime lens" way. I'm tempted to save for the 85L... honestly the 24-70 is a nice lens, but it don't have WOW factor that the 135L have.

Its something that I want to do... sell it... but first I really wanted to "Try" a wedding or an event with only primes, so Im kind of nervous to sell it and later miss it... for the moment will be 35L - 135L, and 17-40 for the wide shots...

Someone has done this exchange? ???

I haven't personally known any wedding photographers, nor have I ever done a wedding without, the 24-70L lens. I use plenty of light during weddings so f/2.8 is plenty wide, it is as sharp as the 35L at f/2.8, and it offers far more flexibility. Going all prime is not anything special, in fact, it's a way to miss a lot of shots if your are not very careful. My vote is no.

I've bought 5 different 24-70mm L's. 4 used and one new. None of them were really supurb, and not worth the price. I'd sell yours now while the prices are high. If you ever want another, you can get the Tamron IS version for less, and its better.

the 135 is nice for outdoor but indoor especially wedding might not be a good idea if you were to only use prime. Space is an issue with 135 for indoor. if i were you just keep the 24-70, you need flexibility.

I agree....my 24-70 is my goto lens about 90% of the time during weddings. With that in mind, I do use primes throughout the entire day....but it depends what type of shot I'm going for. It's not because I dislike my primes..the 24-70 is just a versatile lens...and especially when your in an environment like weddings, where things just happen, I would rather catch the shot and it be not 100% "perfect" than miss the shot all together.

I'd suggest keep it for the versatility the zoom offers you especially if you have been satisfied by your copy.

On the other hand, you can always rent a couple of primes for your next wedding and see how you find the experience.

This is actually a pretty easy question to answer. You have a catalog of photos, and all of them have EXIF data that tell you exactly what focal lengths you used. So, go through (this is easy to do on a PC, or in Lightroom on Mac) and see what focal lengths you use most. If you're using the 24-70 in the 24-40 range a lot, then you'll be fine, as your 17-40 covers that. If you're using it a lot in the 50-70 range, then that tells you which prime you need to buy next, as a 50mm would be a necessity in your "all-prime" route.

As you see, everyone shoots differently and will have a different perspective, so the only real way to answer your question is to see how you shoot now.

You can do a All-prime weddings, you just need two bodies to do so. Example.

5D3 + 24L
5D3 + 50L

These two combos will get you thru 90% of the day. Rotate the 135L on as needed.

Doing an all prime wedding will score you a different look than Zooms, You have to be active in getting your shots.

I'm not a pro shooter, photography is my hobby and its beginning to pay itself, I already have shoot a few weddings, but some of my "wedding heroes" photographers have a special feeling in their images, and I have noticed that they use mainly primes.

Well, I did it...

Sold my 24-70 for 1400 dlls, 200 more than the 1200 I paid 2 years ago when I bought it new...

Just shoot a Halloween party last weekend, I love the sharpness and bokeh, and shooting at iso 1600 in an almost dark house with bounce flash, I think I will love this 35L just as much my 135L

I'm tempted to add a 85 to fill the gap

Sigma's looks promising, canon one is tempting too...
