how innovative, Canon. World's first variable image height lens! What a fabulous invention. Memory of Thomas Alpha Edison will fade ...

New Patent: 12 - 60 mm f/2-4
PowerShot G1 X Mark II: 12.5 - 65mm f/2-3.9

World's first? Well, no. At least, not in a patent.

Here's the EF-M 9-17mm from earlier this year. IIRC, there were others before that.

So about the same focal length as the G1X II?

Curious what they are going to do to the overall size.

If this finally has a new sensor, it's got potential, the sensor for the G1X II was dead on arrival.

Actually, my photography teacher showed how a Nikon DX zoom lens (can't recall which) can cover a Nikon FX sensor at long focal lengths & wide apertures.

i know. same goes for some canon lenses (eg EF-S 10-22).
but i am not interested in using lenses this way at all.

all i am interested in is small lenses entirely covering APS-C image circle in all usage scenarios with some reserve to spare. and compact lenses entirely covering FF (135) image circle ... corner to corner at any setting.

not interested in 1.5" sensored cams either. those canon g1x cams are virtually same size as a properly APS-C sensored EOS M/M2/M10 with a proper lens mount up front. i don't see any value in canon pursueing 1.5" sensor instead of their crop 1.6x APS-C sensors. if anything they should look at APS-C sensor cams similar to nikon DL (concept).

I bought a G15 for two reasons.

First is it's small enough to carry at all times, so I take it when I don't want to carry a FF DSLR, or several lenses.

Second is I don't want to spend money on lenses I couldn't mount on my FF DSLR.

Yet you felt necessary to reply to this thread. LMAO!

BTW, Canon is upgrading the G1X II because it has a string following as those owners know that the Nikon DL series have a 1" sensor not APS-C. :D

Admin, why isn't this in the PowerShot Rumor section?

Canon should implement variable image height lens to DSLR line, first wish in 2017 :)
