The 760d has very good specs, for Canon, that is. The camera body is much smaller than a xxd and most likely the firmware is crippled vs. the 70d - but still, it's a challenge.

+ AF 19-point cross-type. Center F2.8 corresponding dual cross (take that, 6d!)
+ RGB-IR photometry sensor. 63 zone TTL metering
- shutter 1/4000s, x-sync 1/200s
- 5fps
* newest dpaf and anti-flicker

Do you think the 70d will be the last xxd and in the future, there will just be "premium" Rebels and the semi-pro 7d2? Or is there still room for something in between?

I'm hoping for a firmware update for my 70D sometime soon. There are definitely things that could be added - some 7DII features like expanded zone AF, 60P video and/or uncompressed output, better volume level control, intervalometer and so on.

There is still enough room (both price and feature wise) above the new 760D for an 80D. So I think Canon will release it one day. But I don't think it will be very soon. Maybe in October or November...

I wouldn't hold your breathe on that. I don't think Canon's updates are usually consequence...

My stupid crazy outrageous possible prediction is that the 80D becomes FF as a 6D Junior of sorts. I base this off the rumor that Sony is producing their new sensors, which may allow for lower FF sensor prices, and thus a FF 80D.

Good thinking, it would indeed make a lot of sense for Canon to release the d760 as it is if they're planning to tickle down the ff sensor to the xxd line with the 80d (or whatever the name).

And it would spare them the hassle to come up with a 6d2 threatening the 5d3 sales as a 80d ff sensor would probably not "high iq & low light" as the 6d1, but somewhere in the 30s mp resolution right between the 5d4 and 5ds.

I would think that is what the 7d line would be for.

I don't think it will merge. The Specs are impressive for a rebel but rebel's cramp my hand after shooting awhile. A 50D never hurt my hand with its bigger frame.
7D2 is a big price jump from a rebel and only for a bigger grip? I don't see it.
